My son applied and got everything in by Nov.30th to meet a priority deadline. Does this school practice rolling admissions? How long do you think it will take to make a decision? His gpa is low but has a nice SAT score of 1990, (12 on the essay), good recs. good, ec's and wrote an amazing essay. He had a weak 9th grade year which affected his whole GPA but has been on an upward trend and is taking a very tough courseload this year. Any input? Also when do you think he will hear? Thank you.

I'd say mid-March. His low gpa will hurt him, since gpa is 2/3 of the decision. As for rec's/essays/ec's, you can just ignore those (they play little to no role in admission - almost negligible). Tough courseload this year? That won't help either. If I remember correctly (from last year), PSU does not ask for senior year courseload. Right now, he's on the low-end of the spectrum. I don't really know how low his gpa may be, but if it's higher than 3.6, I'd say he still has a shot.

If he applied by Nov 30th then he is guaranteed to hear by Jan 31st. That is all the information they can give. They usually do the higher and lower GPA's first and then work to the middle GPAs (around a 3.5 and 3.6).They do not look at courseload/transcript but basically just the weighted GPA as long as you send it. They will only read his personal statement and look at his ECs. Also, they dont look at the writing part of the SAT but it sounds like he did pretty good not including that, he should be fine.
