I wanted to enroll in PHYS 1116 or honors mechanics today, but by the time I got to it the class was full. This is a mere three hours after my appointment window opened. I'm guessing the class was filled by arts and sciences kids :(

I really really want to take this class. It's closed so I can't pre-enroll in it ... but is there any way at all I might be able to take the class?! I'm in engineering, prospective Engineering Physics major.

People add/drop courses right before classes start as well as during the first few weeks of classes.

So, it’s likely that spots will open up. If not, you can always go to the first lecture and talk to the professor about enrolling in the class. There is hope! :)

It was probably full 10 minutes after the appointment opened. This is an important point: if there are any classes you suspect will be filled quickly, you should be sitting there waiting, refreshing before it opens.

That being said, people will drop it, and you should be fiine.

suze, try attending the lectures/discussions as an unofficial member of the class for the first couple of weeks while waiting for people to drop. ansar has a point there: people will drop honors physics once they get an idea of how difficult it’s going to be.

You know what would be awesome? If Schedulizer showed how many seats are left in each class (I picked a PE on Schedulizer then got Student Center and found out that there was only one seat left…and it was in another time slot that thankfully worked out. Also, if we could switch around the sections for classes our colleges enrolled us in before add/drop, that’d be just swell. As of now, my whole Friday is free EXCEPT for two sections that happen to be bright and early 9 AM. I don’t mind class on Friday, but 9 AM to go for two hours of class isn’t going to work for me. Or I’ll be really, really ****ed about it. One of those two.

^You can technically switch between sections for a class as long as there is a space (prof’s are usually very flexible about that; they just care that you are registered for one of discussion sections). So, you might be able to sneak in to the discussion section that works with you. Also, make sure you don’t keep changing your discussion sections.

A point that Feral24 forgot is that its very helpful to have the course numbers before you sign up. Once you’ve made your schedule, go on student center and look up the unique id number, which is usually a 5 digit random number. Write down the numbers, and add courses asap using the ID numbers on the course add page.

If you are worried, E-mail professor Shen. He’s a really nice guy and will tell you what he wants you to do (probably will tell you to just show up anyway).

Thank you everyone for the reassurances and the help. I’ll try to get in still. Even if I don’t I’ll still attend the lectures, because damn it I’m not spending my first semester at Cornell not doing Physics.
