I am currently working on my pre-requisite work for pharmacy school. I attend my local community college and this is my last semester there and I will graduate from there with honors this year. My problem is, my community college doesn’t offer 3 of the classes that I absolutely need for my pre-requisite work. There is another community college 20 minutes from my hometown that does offer these classes. I was going to transfer there for fall 2015 and spring 2016 to do those classes. Now, I only need those 3 classes. If I take 2 one semester and take the other plus another elective the next semester, that would make me a part time student with at least 6 credit hours. My question is, will I get my financial aid over there like i did at my community college? I understand that the money will be cut in half because I will not be a full time student. I just need enough to pay for those 4 classes. But it should transfer over there, right? I really need information about this because I am worried. I did contact that community college and they seemed confused and confused me even more.
When I was in community college, I needed to go full time to recieve any aid.
18 credits I believe.
If you are going part time and living at home, will you be working?
Do you already have a BA?
It’s unlikely to transfer more than two years of credits from community college to the school from which you will be graduating with your undergrad degree.
What are you planning for your undergrad degree?
Pharmacy school generally does not accept pre- reqs that were taken nine years or more before your acceptance to pharmacy school.
Depending on the strenght of your community college, you may not be doing yourself any favors by trying to get all your pre- req courses fulfilled there.
Can you get federal aid if you graduate from one community college and are taking 3 classes at another community college but not working toward a degree?
How much do these classes cost?
Can you work in summer to save the money to pay for them?
While you ultimately may save money if your school accepts all your community college coursework, if you can avoid taking out a loan ( which if eligible, is unlikely to be subsidized), for a six credit class, you will be better off.
I also want to correct my earlier post. I stated some schools may not accept pre req courses taken more than nine years previous to pharmacy school.
That is true, however other schools may not accept courses taken more than FIVE years previous to application.
Is the limit on federal aid determined by credits or semesters? If the 6 years are counted by semesters, I wouldn’t waste 2 of the 12 by enrolling for only a class or two. I’d try to pay for the extra courses out of pocket if I couldn’t pick them up at a 4-year school and transfer them with your other cc credits.
