Does anyone have any recent news or impressions about the 2 year certificate program at Neighborhood Playhouse in NYC? A friend's son who has just finished his current freshman year at an Oregon University has been recommended to and accepted into the program through the efforts of a professor who used to work there. We need to find out if the program is still valuable and highly thought of or is just resting on old laurels before he decides if he wants to leave his current college and do the 2 year program instead. Anything I can find on here is 2-6 years old and not highly informative. . .

I, too, wish there was a resource as thorough as this one about professional programs like Neighborhood Playhouse and Stella Adler. Ideas, anyone?

Check out The Neighborhood Playhouse’s new website - [The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre](http://www.neighborhoodplayhouse.org)

The Neighborhood Playhouse is different because it is accredited by NAST and the NYC Board of Ed. - you can’t say that for many post-secondary acting conservatories these days.

This may not be entirely helpful, but I know someone who was a student there maybe three years ago, who absolutely loved and valued his education there, but was unfortunately cut after the first year, which is not uncommon there. He continues to live in NYC and he gets tech work and some minor acting roles and auditions here and there. Beyond that, I couldn’t tell you much. However, it would definitely be an entirely different experience than the one your friend’s son is receiving at Oregon --much smaller, no GE requirements or classes, and a much larger city, which should all be considered just as, if not more heavily than the laurels of the program (I’m sure they already know this, just wanted to restate it – reputation shouldn’t be valued over happiness in my opinion!) Good luck!

The Neighborhood Playhouse still has a good reputation, but I’d also look into The William Esper Studio and Maggie Flanagan Studio if I wanted to get Meisner training in New York. All three are good, but the personalities are different and it really comes down to which “flavor” he’d prefer. Some of the Rutgers voice, speech and movement faculty actually moonlight at Maggie’s and Barbara Marchant who heads the BFA still teaches a class at Esper’s and Vicki Hart who heads the Tisch Meisner studio was herself trained and approved to teach the technique by Esper.

Fishbowlfreshman: You seem to know a lot about the studios in New York. My son, a rising junior, has said he wants to skip college for now and study in New York. What do you think of the other studies–Stella Adler, Atlantic Acting School, etc.?

See Post 14 of this thread for a list Fishbowl provided before – Atlantic and Stella are on her list. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/theater-drama-majors/1308605-help-opinions-welcome.html
