neoucom students

Anyone attending neoucom starting summer 2005? I am starting at Kent and I have a few questions about the program. Also, it'd be great to know at least one of the 34 BS/MDers I'll meet real soon.

my good friend is going to neoucom at kent. i'm really interested in the program, so make sure to post your feelings/attitudes toward it! also, i've heard many good and bad things about it. if i apply, do you think i should apply early? what were your interview questions like? thanks! and congrats on getting in :)

even though I'm REALLY no expert (yet) on the program, I would have to say applying early is a must. im not sure if it increases your chances of being admitted, but you interview in nov and find out if your in by dec 6th (about two weeks later). besides the stress factor, its great bc i didnt have to apply anywhere else. (or at least finish any other apps completely...saved a lot on app fees) And the interview...well that is tough to describe. kent basically grilled me about morality (via a philosophy prof) and tried to see if i would change my mind after killing two or so of my patients during hypothetical situations. It was like a choose-your-own-ending scenario with only wrong answers. Besides the mind games, youngstown had me make a collage...which was interesting. And akron was just a conversation about myself. Basically I think I was just so passionate for 30 minutes straight (i lost my voice at the end of each interview) they probably thought I'd be fun to watch bounce around in med school. Thank you for the congrats, and feel free to ask anything. (But since the only good points/bad points I know are a little subjective, such as advisors, each school's quality of classwork, prog student quality at each school, etc, the guidebook is the best place to get an objective feel about accelerated med progs)

hi meremd.
i am also going to neoucom this summer. however i'm going through youngstown. did you guys have your orientation yet? because i met several of my classmates through orientation we had last week. wow! kent starts on june 13! thats insane. youngstown starts on june 20. i am also from columbus. where in columbus are you? i also private messaged you so hopefully we will get in touch.

i havent scheduled/had an orientation yet (May 26th) for some bizarre reason unknown to me. I am from Gahanna (Gahanna Lincoln HS) and we should definitly get in touch since we both have a bit of a distance to travel. yeah, kent starts the earliest of all three schools, which is fine in my book. I graduated from hs in jan., but the ceremony is june 4th, so the timing worked out alright. (i have college finals the 6th, so i probably wont have too much time to hang around before i leave for kent) I'll email you with my kent email so we can talk more, but it takes SO long for it to load on my computer, so if possible, cc would be a bit easier for me. Hope to hear from you soon, and i'm also wondering, why not Kent? Love to hear your thoughts.

p.s. since there is such a lack of info about neoucom on here, some communication on the board might help some others out a bit too. esp. when it comes to which school of the three is best, and those totally crazy interviews...

hey meremd,
good luck this summer. i would love to hear your opinions on it! if i apply early and get accepted, do i have to notify them by december or do i have til may? how would you reccommend preparing for the interviews? and, what was the collage about? also, i read that you graduated early? what have you been doing the past few months? thanks, take care!

you have to notify by May 1st at the latest, although the earlier the better since someone else would gladly take the spot. about the interviews...it is important to have one current medical issue that you care about and drive it home. the collage was a square that you had to fill in a way that displayed your personality. you also had to write a page about why you wanted to become a doctor (only for YSU). the only other prep i could see is knowing the school, having questions, and just being relaxed. also, it is important to realize that neoucom is a state school that is interested in making primary care docs that stay to practice in ohio. its not a bad idea, if you are unsure of your medical goals, to consider the mission statement and talk about how the important role primary docs have and your interest (even if minimal) of pursuing a career in primary care in oh. i have the benefit of actually wanting to be in primary care, but i heard that being too confident about another career may be a turn off. and dont ever change your mind after saying something about what you would do in a medical situation, stick to your guns at all costs. shadowing is a must or volunteering in medicine, so make sure you have something to talk about your experiance. as for myself, im full time at a community college (about 15 hours a quarter) and trying to enjoy myself a bit before june 13 (no ecs really, just a bit more shadowing and same volunteering). ive taken all of my classes for summer already, so i hope to have a good headstart by scheduling beyond what most people are taking. i didnt take any aps senior yr, hence the early grad, and opted for college credit. they seemed to be impressed that in nov(time of interview) i was going to hs, night classes, and 25 hrs on the weekend at a local movie theater. plus some ecs, shadowing, volunteerig, etc. its about being able to handle hours and hours of nonstop work, not necessarily being president of every school club. may be monstercheese can agree. on that note, i hope ive helped.

hello all! I will be beginning this summer as well....at youngstown... so i will probably see you monstercheese...in what like 5 or 6 days?!?!?!? good luck to you too meer ... i will know you soon enough i guess....

what were the out-of-state stats for ppl who got in? also, when do they notify for interviewS?

i got into kent, i go tthe letter, but i only had info about the normal school. Do they send a seperate paper telling you if you get into their med program? What's going on? when are the interviews? Where can I find this information?

if i didnt get into kent bs/md, what are the chances that ill still get into youngstown and akron?

I was recently asked for interviews in the 3 universities. I would like to know if my chance to be accepted is big.
Also I wanna ask: do most students start in summer or fall????
does this affect if i finish in 6 or 7 years???

extremefob: if your out of state, not that great.

Everyone starts summer. Most do 6 yrs, but it depends what school you go to. Number of interviews is not necessarily indicative of chances. I'll be at interviews at Kent this Sunday, check it out.
