i currently have a ti-83 plus and i wanted to get a new one as this calculator doesn't have everything i need.

i'm trying to decide between the ti-84 and ti-89. i will need it for senior year (AP calc bc) and college. I can do everything i need with the 84 for calc bc, but since i'm getting a new calculator i might as well buy the 89 if thats what i will need more often in college. which calculator would i be better off with?

If it matters, i'm most likely going to major in biology in college so i will be taking math classes.

Apparently the 89 is banned in most testing centers and colleges because it does practically all the calculus for you. It’s handy, but it would really suck if you couldn’t use it outside of high school…I’m not sure though, maybe you can to try asking in the College Life Forum?
But so far, what I’ve heard is that the 84 is just a pimped up version of 83, and it still has virtually the same exact functions as the 83. And the 89 is the ultimate genius calculator that is banned in most places…

I would take the TI84, bc the TI89 is banned very often - and it’s not even good. If you really want a nerdy calculator, use TIVoyage - this one is AWESOME.

What’s wrong with the TI-83? There’s really no point just upgrading to the TI-84 because they’re identical in function; the only difference is the memory if you play games on it or something (and the aesthetics of course).

What could you possibly need that isn’t on the Ti-83?

Parametrics, derivatives and integrals, function solver. You buy an 89 if you’re thinking of 3D graphing and other engineering-related functions.

Seriously. I could do more with a scientific calculator than most kids at my school can do with 89s.

I find the times where I need to do this sort of work I’m way better off using actual mathematical software such as Maple, Mathematica, or Matlab.
