I applied to MCDB at UCLA with a 3.68 gpa... I'm on the average admitted gpa borderline for last year. I'm anxiously awaiting the 19th and praying that I got in. Anyone else in my boat? Calling all UCLA bio majors! :P I also haven't completed the 2nd semester of ochem that's "recommended" so I know that might put me at a disadvantage.

No unfortunately my first semester of ochem is in progress right now. I think most other applicants will have second semester finished prior to transfer :/

I know! crossing my fingers! idk why there are so many bio major applicants but i dont see that many bio people on this forum lol. My gpa is 3.93 but I got a D in Ochem 1 during summer and I dropped 2 prereq classes following fall while i was applying so idk how they are going to look at it…

Also I wish I would’ve known better and applied as mcdb/human bio/physiological science… Reg bio has so many applicants!!

Same major, and essentially the same GPA 3.67. I was admitted last year, but I had the ochem series completed. That being said, I know someone that was admitted also that had a 3.71 (not far off from your own GPA) and just the first semester of o-chem completed. Did you finish any of the physics series? And how have you done in your major pre-reqs, specifically Bio and Chem? UCLA will consider your performance in your major pre-reqs as well as your overall GPA.

@wintergreeen I think you should be fine! You’re retaking ochem1 right now right? And as long as your other prereqs will be finished you should be in good shape cuz a 3.93 is really good! But reg bio has a REALLY low average gpa admitted so really that narrows down their pool of applicants a LOT since a lot of them aren’t that competitive.
Do you think not having ochem2 will have a big impact on us?

@xcballin Haha yeah they come out so late. I haven’t even heard from UCI yet and I tagged there! Good luck to you!

@dilapidatedmind WOW that’s awesome! I wonder how much they’ll look at our extracurriculars and personal statements. I think I have some good stuff on mine, hopefully that helps me. No I haven’t attempted physics I’ve done well in my prereqs with just one B!

It’s my been my impression that UCLA doesn’t “heavily” factor extracurriculars and personal statement in at least it doesn’t seem to be as much of a variable as for UC Berkeley. What I mean is that I don’t think it’s going to take someone with a 3.2 and get them into an impacted major just because they had strong ECs and a well-written personal statement. That’s just my impression though from seeing admission threads and talking to people that were admitted.

I think you’ll get accepted. My friend didn’t start physics either and only had one ochem course completed, although he did have a perfect 4.0 in all his pre-req courses. I finished both series, but I had one B in ochem.

I’m also very nervous. I applied as MicroBio major with 3.63 GPA. I will have completed all the pre-req (including the recommended) except the 3rd quarter of O.chem ( which i will do over SS1) at the end of spring. April 19, why you no come faster!!!

@dilapidatedmind ohh okay what you’re saying makes sense. So basically they’ll only look at my extracurriculars/PS if they find another 3.68 mcdb major with 1 semester of ochem done, to differentiate us apart. Hopefully the pool of applicants I’m going against isn’t way more competitive than I am haha. This whole process has gotten me so anxious/nervous.

@mcliauw you’re in great standing!! Having the recommended prereqs will definitely give you an edge. April 19th is going to determine my life. Haha

@BiotoUCLA I think you’re fine. Don’t worry about it too much! I heard back yesterday from UCLA surprisingly for mathematics and I got in!!! Even though I thought decisions would come out on Friday but lucky me right?! I don’t think they’ll heavily judge you on one semester of ochem! Bio is a REALLY tough major, even Rick Ross wouldn’t dare to apply as biology to UCLA with the money his got.
