Neuroscience Major

Hello,

I was looking at the McGill website and found a program I was interested in, specifically a Neuroscience Major. However, after looking through the site, I could not find the specific requirements. It's a part of the science faculty, so I assume the usual standards apply, but what other requirements are there? It says only 50 students are admitted per year, so there's obviously something to it.

Thanks!

I couldn’t find anything on the Neuroscience department saying that only 50 students are admitted each year. These are the sites I looked at:

<a href=“Major in Neuroscience | BSc Programs in Neuroscience - McGill University”>Major in Neuroscience | BSc Programs in Neuroscience - McGill University;
<a href=“Honours | BSc Programs in Neuroscience - McGill University”>Honours | BSc Programs in Neuroscience - McGill University;

As far as I could understand from those links, the process for completing a neuroscience major is effectively the same as for any other science major. You enroll in the Faculty of Science, and from the U1 year start taking up the neuroscience related courses (look up course selection in the first link).

The only program that has limited enrollment is the Honours program. To enroll in honours, you need to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the U1 prerequisite courses and a 3.3 GPA to graduate.

If you click on the link to the “Application Form” on this webpage

http://www.mcgill.ca/neuroscience/programs/major/major-application</a></p>

you will find a bit more information on applying to the major. My daughter considered applying after her first year, but ultimately decided to minor in neuroscience. She does have a close friend who applied and is in the program. It is competitive – though the application says you must have a minimum cGPA of 3.2 to apply, in order to have a chance of being accepted, I was told you really need to be above a 3.5.

upapilot, I found this on

http://www.mcgill.ca/study/2014-2015/faculties/science/undergraduate/programs/bachelor-science-bsc-major-neuroscience</a></p>

"Notes on admission to the Neuroscience Major program: Enrolment in the Neuroscience Major is limited to a total of 50 students per year. " I am confident in my ability to achieve a high enough GPA to get in, but the cap is worrying me somewhat.

@Erothu‌ Uh!! The McGill website is so inconsistent at times. Anyway I suppose enrollment would then depend on your GPA in the pre-requisite Math and Science courses. I suggest you contact the neuroscience department and inquire about the minimum GPA required to get in.

I am a year 3 student in the Neuroscience major, it is indeed very competitive. There are 50 spots every year, and a good part of these are reserved for CEGEP students from Quebec, so it is even less than this. You must apply from within Mcgill after taking 1 year of classes(after u0), along with an essay. Most people I have spoken to had a GPA above 3.7, with 3.7 being the bare minimum

Would you say its a worthwhile program? I want to do neurotechnology
