Neuroscience

I'm interested in majoring in (the newly approved) Neuroscience. If any of you have, or know anyone who has, taken on Neuroscience as a major or certificate, what are your thoughts on Neuroscience at Duke?

Uh, it was JUST approved 5 days ago for the Class of 2013 (i.e. those who aren’t on Duke’s campus yet). So nobody could possibly have majored in it or taken courses in the “major.” However, I know of people who majored in psych with a neuroscience concentration and found the courses interesting and all had good research experience through the psych dept/medical center. It seemed like an obvious decision to create its own major - I’m surprised it took this long actually.

Whoops, sorry–I mistyped. I meant to say “taken Neuroscience as a minor or certificate,” not major.

^lol that is a big difference

Is this a certainty for class of 2013? There is no mention of it on the Duke web site

Yes, this is a certainty for the class of 2013. Information meetings for current students are being held on campus next week I think.

Here’s the new website for the Neuroscience major and minor with information on requirements and curriculum:

[Undergraduate Neuroscience | Duke Institute for Brain Sciences | Brain Research](http://dibs.duke.edu/education/undergraduate-neuroscience)

The information sessions on the new Neuroscience major are tomorrow and Wednesday.

From the website:
* Tuesday, April 21st, 4pm, West Campus, Love Auditorium (B101 LSRC)
* Wednesday, April 22nd, 4pm, East Campus, East Duke Bldg., Pink Parlor (Rm. 119)

dunno if this is too late, but yea, the program is up and running and it’s pretty intense. 18 credits and a bit bio based. and it’s actually possible for the class of 2010 and later to graduate with the major, as long as you meet all the requirements. I got all the requirements except for one semester of physics, as well as a new class they’re offering this upcoming spring (my senior year) that’s bio 195S, neural mechanisms or something like that. so I don’t know if you’re already at Duke or if you’re class of 2013, but it’s definitely a good major!

Ha, one of the reasons I didn’t choose duke was because it didn’t have major nueroscience program.

Though I’m still happy with my choice.
Just Ironic.

^i was worried about that when i applied, but i loved everything else enough to try and give it a shot.

seems like things worked out for the best for me :)

btw forgot to include this in my other post, but though it’s a new major, it’s REALLLLY broad. there’s a capstone course, which I think was functional neuroimaging, and a few prereqs that you have to take (bio bases of behavior, fundamentals of neuroscience, this new higher-level seminar). but besides that, there’s just a bunch of electives and then the requirements for the BS in psychology (six credits in natural sciences, at least 3 above 100 level, spread out across at least 3 different subjects. I used an AP credit in physics, bio 25, chem 23, chem 151 (orgo/death semester 1), forensics science, fundamentals of neuroscience for the six credits. it’s not hard at all to get it, especially if you are/were premed). basically, any class that has ANYTHING to do with neuroscience, be it cognitive, developmental, or biologicacl based, counts as an elective. so if it sounds like a class has to do with the brain or perception, it probably could help count towards the 10 elective requirement.

also, if anyone wants to ask me anything about psych/neuroscience/anything related to Duke who is currently at or looking to go to Duke, feel free to email me
