i have been a commuter student at a instate school with a prepaid college program, so i never needed financial aid.

I am transferring to another school up north and financial conditions have changed and my need has risen.

starting there summer B, so i would have had to complete a Fafsa 2008-09 according to my school...I always assumed there was a WAY early deadline..

I went ahead and submitted a fafsa 2 days ago (2008-09) so i could have aid this summer B, will this likely be ignored/not-honored because of the extremely short notice?

someone told me that i would have had to submit it back during summer08fall08 to qualify for aid...I just need that pell grant to make it by though.

can i still get federal aid? sorry never done aid before. confused

Aid for summer is very school specific, search their site for general guidelines

Yes you can still get federal aid for the summer (assuming you are otherwise eligible based on your EFC, enrollment etc). The last date you can file the 2008-2009 FAFSA is June 2009. Obviously most people file it earlier because they are filing for the full 2008-2009 school year. But the June 2009 deadline allows for those students requiring aid starting the spring or summer semesters to apply. Aid that has limited funding such as the Perkins loan or SEOG grant will likely not be available as those funds will probably be gone but aid such as the Pell grant and the Stafford loan will still be available.

To be eligible for any Pell for the 2008-2009 school year your 2008-2009 EFC would have to be below 4042. If it is below 4042 you will be eligible for the Pell but will not receive the full annual amount but a prorated amount for the summer session. At the school I go to the summer session is counted as only a half semester so the amount of Pell is only half the amount of a regular semester. I don’t know if that is the same for all schools or specific to this school.

Pell pays on a sliding basis … 100% for 12 or more credits, 75% for 9-11 credits, 50% for 6-8 credits, and 25% for 1-5 credits. Generally, you would be eligible for an award of 50% of the scheduled annual award in a given term. If you are scheduled for an annual Pell of 4731, you would be eligible to receive $2366/2365 in each of the first two terms. Let’s use the 2366 figure … if you take 6 credits in the term, you would only get 50% of the 2366, or 1183.

If you took 6 credits in the fall & got 1183, then you took 13 credits in the winter & got 2365 … you have used 75% of your annual scheduled award. If you take summer classes, you can get the last 25% of your award. This will not prorate based on # of credits, since the lowest award is 25% … you’ll just get that last 25% no matter how many classes you take.

BTW, this is set to change for 2009-10, when the new Pell rules come out. I will update when they are published.

Interesting information kelsmom. Thanks.
