"New College" At BU

Check it out. What are your thoughts?

[“New College” to Replace UNI | BU Today](<a href=“http://www.bu.edu/today/campus-life/2008/04/03/new-college-replace-uni]"New”>http://www.bu.edu/today/campus-life/2008/04/03/new-college-replace-uni)

UNI, while a great program, was almost unknown. It makes sense to replace it and this idea is a good start, especially given BU's new master plan, which calls for greater integration of resources and the creation of more opportunities for students.

Well I know that. But I was wondering what people thought about the new thing. I personally don't like the name, I think it's confusing. I do like the fact that it's more structured and widespread.

There's a tradition in liberal arts of naming things "New," most literally as in New College.

If BU were more into marketing, they'd pick a name with oomph.

there's a college in florida called New College. the professors don't use grades to rate their performances in school, instead at the beginning of first semester you write like a contract saying what you're going to do to stay on track and if you don't do what you say you were going to do you get kicked out haha. it's filled with hippies too.
yeah idk just thought i'd put that out there :]

The first of these was the "New School" in NYC.

I came to CC this morning to ask a question about this.

Does this new college apply to the newly admitted class of 2012?

It looks as thought they are in between the to-be-discontinued UNI program and the to-be-established new college.

...well, the first of these was New College, Oxford (founded 1379)

Personally, I think this is a really important step. One of BU's biggest problems is accessibility of resources-- the students in the professional schools have limited access to the best resources in the liberal arts and sciences, and vice versa. UNI makes high-level interdisciplinary study possible, but the university's investment in UNI has been at the expense of breadth of education for students in the larger schools and colleges, including many whose academic abilities are well on par with UNI's standards. New College has the potential to change all that.
UNI appears to be a wonderful program, but I definitely support the new plans.

No it won't apply to the class of 2012. They still have to get everything approved and work out the logistics of staffing and the admissions process

What are the general expectations of the New College? I'm trying to decide between BU, GWU, Tufts, and Maryland and the quality of the honors programs at the schools is therefore really important to me..

New College doesn't really exist yet. They are creating it. So it shouldn't factor into your decision too much since we don't know when it will officially start

The article's description of the "New College" is close to what has been implemented at Lehigh University: South Mountain College.

Ah, okay, someone on another thread had suggested that it was supposed to basically be the new honors program. Online it said I had been selected for the honors program, but there was nothing in my admissions packet. Does anyone know anything about the honors program at BU?

There is a separate letter coming about the honors program. My daughter's letter arrived yesterday. It parrots information found here:
