New England/NY college search...Business/Entreprenuership

My daughter graduates in 2018. Her freshman year was horrible due to a diagnosis of anxiety/depression (late in the year) and the death of her father…Her sophomore year she changed schools and improved…to a b/c average…Her junior year she was high honors all year and scored only 1020 on her first SAT try. She is scheduled to take a full rigorous courseload her senior year, works, volunteers and is motivated.Unfortunately, one great year didn’t push her overall GPA up enough to be more competitive. I am afraid to encourage her to apply to schools if she is going to get turned down by them all! Does anyone have recommendations for colleges in the New England or NY area with a higher acceptance rate? Looking for a smaller school, with a business concentration, preferably in a suburban area (not urban but not completely rural). Keep in mind her DREAM school is Wagner College (Staten Island)…small but easy access to NYC for internships etc.

THank you !

Perhaps talk with the guidance counselor and see if he/she can discuss the fact that her dad passed away during freshman year and her subsequent improvement academically.

Not knowing her GPA or what is affordable it is hard to suggest – but some ideas offhand (based on her “dream” school of Wagner) might be Adelphi and Hofstra in Long Island. In Westchester she might consider Pace (there is a campus in NYC but she would likely prefer the suburban campus in Pleasantville) and Manhattanville College in Purchase.

If entrepreneurship definitely consider Babson College.

@philbegas Don’t think Babson will be in the cards with a 1020 SAT.

If it remains a 1020 then probably not, but I figured if it was a cold first try it was at least worth looking into @happy1

@lviscomi It would be helpful to know the students GPA. In addition, if the student does poorly on the SAT repeatedly, I recommend trying the ACT cold and seeing if there are better results.

In addition, what is the family’s budget per year before loans are needed?

Schools that come immediately to mind without additional information are:
Drexel U
Temple U
Bryant U
U of Delaware (not sure if that’s still considered new england?)
University of Rhode Island
Rutgers-New Brunswick
Suffolk U
I second Adelphi and Hofstra if NY is desirable.
UMass Boston

Maybe U of Maryland College Park if that’s close enough
Syracuse
Clarkson

Manhattanville College
Iona College
Drew University in NJ
Seton Hall in NJ
Fairfield University in CT - this could be a reach
SUNY Purchase
SUNY New Paltz - don’t know how it is for business

Don’t give up on Wheaton. She should try the ACT instead of the SAT (sometimes kids do better on one or the other). See if you can get her an essay coach - a good essay might make a difference given her difficulties freshman year and upward trend.

If you are full pay, that could make a difference in admission at the private colleges.

Bentley?
