New for 2024: NYU Studio Placement discussion

New discussion for those (who / whose kids) will be attending Tisch Drama in the Fall! The studio assignment is always a fun and exciting piece of news but you can discuss anything you want here. Lots to look forward to!

We’ve got an old thread on this but it’s pretty long so I am going to link here in case anyone wants to read 3 years of posts!

Tagging members who might like to participate @BloomingGirl @tsamuique @Daddily and I know there are more…

I have to put the traditional NYU Studio Lightbulb joke on this thread because it’s too good not to have everywhere. Thanks to @toowonderful who heard in it 2014 and posted it again in 2018.

How many Adler kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?
“I am the light bulb.”

How many Atlantic Kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?"
“How can I get you to screw in the light bulb?”

“How many Strasberg kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”
“The light bulb was warm, my mother was there…”

“How many Meisner kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?
“How many Meisner kids does it take to screw in a light bulb? How many Meisner kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?” How many Meisner kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”

“How many NSB kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”
"I don’t do Tech.

“How many ETW Kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”
“Orange.”

“How many Playwrights kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”
“I can do it! and in addition if you need anything, I can also hang and focus the light, and when I’m done with that if you need me I can build the set and sew the costumes. But let me give you a conflict schedule because I’m also acting. Oh, and do you know of anyone who needs a dramaturg? I’m not doing anything on Wed. Nights between 7:52 and 8:37 and I would really like to fill that time slot up.”

“How many Production & Design kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?”
“Its a LAMP, and F&#% You!”

Thanks so much for starting this @CaMom13! And LOL at the joke. I can’t wait to find out my d’s studio. She’s hoping for NSB but is really fine with anything. So the decision she gets will either be good news or great news.

Well. as you know @BloomingGirl - I’m beyond thrilled for your D! I think a lot of actors start out wanting MT because that’s what’s so commonly done in HS. NSB is my D’s studio and she has absolutely grown there but she has friends in other studios and they all get the foundational training from their studio’s unique approach. The studio assignment isn’t who they’ll be, it’s how they’ll start out.

Thanks! My D actually has quite a bit of MT experience, but no real acting training. That’s something they talked about during her interview. So I’m curious to see if they keep her where she’s strongest, or put her somewhere to focus on filling that gap. I’m excited for her either way!

Good luck to all of you and I hope you end up where you want. As @CaMom13 states, most want MT as that was the focus in HS. D attended a Performing Arts HS and was one of a very few cast in straight plays early on. We were thrilled for her but her peers sort of looked down on it as it wasn’t MT.

I actually think a strong foundation in acting will serve these kids well and greatly expand their horizons / interests. D will be attending a different school. It’s an MT program but heavily focuses on acting.

Just my guess but I think there are more professional actors who sing than singers who act. All kinds of shows feature TV and film stars. Also opens it up for more work.

Best of luck to all.

Thanks for starting this thread, @CaMom13 ! We are eagerly awaiting placement. My S did the MT audition but did entrust the “sorting hat” to put him where he belongs. We were trying to play “guess the studio” and I’d been placing bets but then we sat in on the webinar where they said they put you where you need the most development, not necessarily where you are already the strongest. So that shifted my guessing game into (:/)/ land. We will just wait and celebrate when the time comes.

That lightbulb joke is hilarious! Thank you for sharing!

Can’t wait to see how this all unfolds!

Every time I think I have a favorite studio something catches my eye about a different studio. Our kids really can’t go wrong here.

What dorm are you/she hoping she’ll get into @BloomingGirl ? After such a long, painful application process I am sure you guys are having a LOT of fun planning for the Fall!

@CaMom13 I don’t know! I think coming off the waitlist she doesn’t have high hopes for housing, plus she only had a couple of days to fill out the housing form so there wasn’t a lot of time for research. She just asked some other incoming freshman Tisch friends what they put down and put down what they did and we’ll hope for the best!

Crossing fingers! I don’t think they do housing assignments for a while yet because they need to do the whole roommate matching and freshman have reserved dorm space so she should be fine.

And, @BloomingGirl @CaMom13, selecting housing seems to be different than in years past. D and her group of friends had to select top five choices in the second phase (similar to freshman process) instead of a particular room. I wonder if all dorms will be available. D was in 3rd North this year (loved) and it was/is being used to house medical personnel.

@BloomingGirl I don’t think your D can go wrong in any of the freshman dorms. D had friends in each and all were happy.

@yellahamma That’s wonderful to know!

Good to know @yellahamma - my D is leaving university housing to get an apartment this year and I will miss her being in the NYU dorms! Both years her room was great and the dorm locations were unbeatable.

@CaMom13 Is she staying in the city? Is it possible to get an apartment in the city that is comparable in cost to the dorms?

We sure hope so @BloomingGirl ! The cost will be a little higher than the dorms but she might get her own bedroom. She’s roomed with the same friend for two years in a one-room double and would like some private space so she’s hoping to find a 2 BR to split with w/ a friend or a 1 BR with a living room that can be allocated as a BR. I’m letting her drive, I know nothing about finding apts in NYC and she has lots of friends who have done so already. She knows the budget, we’ll see if she ends up in Greenwich Village… Chelsea… or Brooklyn!

@CaMom13 I hope she finds the perfect place with room for you to visit! Are futons still a thing?

Ahahahaha. Yeah well… I don’t expect them to find a place that spacious! NYC apartments are compact, at best. I am willing to pay for hotels (Priceline works great for everything other than move-in and Parents weekend) so I can visit and not be in everyone’s way.

@BloomingGirl I don’t know if this helps, but I was concerned about potentially not getting housing priority if we came off the waitlist, so I looked around and found where it says the deadline to apply for housing priority is May 1st unless you are accepted after May 1st, and then the deadline to apply is the same as your deadline to accept the WL offer and deposit. I (optimistically) read this to mean that if you come off the WL and submit housing by your deadline to accept/deposit your WL offer, then you would be put into the housing pool as if you applied by May 1st with the same priority as those who applied by May 1st (their deadline.) Does that make sense? I may be wrong, but that’s how I read it.
