So the new rankings are out. Michigan improved on a couple of fronts, but also lost ground in some others.
The biggest winner this year was Ross, which improved from #11 last year to #7 this year. As far as employers go, Ross has always been one of the top 10 MBA programs anyway, but this new ranking seems to match industry’s sentiment. Again, Ross’ peer assessment and recruiters’ scores were on par with Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke and Yale. As usual, Ross was one of the few MBA programs that excels in every sub-discipline. Most of them were ranked among the top 5 (accounting, Management and Marketing) and all of the them were among the top 10.
Another winner was the College of Engineering, which improved from #5 to #4. The CoE’s peer and recruiters’ assessment ratings remain strong as always, tied with the likes of CMU, Cornell, Georgia Tech and UIUC. As with Ross, the CoE is one of the few that is strong across all sub-disciplines, with the majority ranked in or around the top 5 and all of them in or around the top 10.
The Law school stayed put at #8. Its peer rating and lawyer/judges ratings remain very strong, tied with the likes of Cal, Duke, NYU, Penn and UVa.
The biggest loser, by far, was the Medical School, which dropped from #9 to #15. The methodology must have changed dramatically, because NYU improved from #12 to #3 and and Mayo Clinic improved from #20 to #6. According to peer assessments and residency directors, Michigan medical school remained very strong (tied for 7th place in the nation with Columbia and Duke medical schools). I am not sure what changes in the methodology prompted the seismic shifts in the Medical School rankings.
The School of Nursing improved from #11 to #8.
The School of Public Affairs improved from #8 to #5.
The School of Education improved marginally from #15 to #14.
In the Sciences, Michigan lost some ground:
Biology dropped from #19 to #23
Chemistry stayed put at #15
Computer Science improved from #13 to #11
Earth Sciences dropped from #8 to #10
Mathematics dropped from #9 to #12
Physics dropped from #11 to #13
The Humanities and Social Sciences were not revised this year, so they remained static:
Economics #12
English #8
History #6
Political Science #4
Psychology #3
Sociology #1
