New here, but what are CCers like?

hi,Im pretty new around here. I feel so ignorant, but what are trolls and flamers? Ive heard ( well read lol) the term various times and I have absolutely no idea what it means....

Trolls are people that post offensive/controversial messages for the express purpose to offend others. I think flamers are basically people that insult others.

I think a big part of CC success is avoiding the whole, "I only scored a 770 on the SAT-II Chem test! Homelessness, here I come!" attitude. You may feel like that (often), but really, no one wants to hear about it. (Though if you do have a real problem, people are very supportive. It keeps you grounded.)

Also, this isn't the place where you can fill a post with incredibly strange acronyms that not even you understand completely, unless they refer to college stuff. Example: No saying "omg im roflmbo oh--jk nm," but you can talk about APUSH helping your ED/EA to HPYS.

Welcome to CC, happypoo... Don't worry, there are lots of less-than-perfect students here. The Ivy forums get huge posting volumes, but so do UCs and many other schools that accept students who haven't published a novel or done ground-breaking research.

hahaha omgfhgoerwtdwpjgksckgfd that was funny cleighdrie

Oh, and please, please don't be intimidated by what people post here :). A lot of times you may see people post things like "2400 SAT's and 3x800 SAT II's, but only the president of 3 clubs so you have no shot a Harvard," and you might think "holy crap i'll just stick with community college," but don't give up on your reach schools no matter what people say! Yes, it is intimidating, but keep in mind that our perspective is quite distorted since this forum is filled with overachievers. Don't alter your college plans because of what you see here!

btw, if you see an sn that's bold, it means they're the moderators (the principals with cane). If you see Roger_Dooley, that's the big boss. :)

Bottomline: be polite, enjoy your stay here and help others while you receive help.

And if you're an international, don't write in your native language :(

Yeah...they want everybody to be able to read your posts, so English's the universal language here in CC.

Oh, is THAT what a bold name means?? Ah, okay, got it!

Another welcome to CC happypoo,

As a parent who ventures over here every now and again, take heart that in the end you will end up where you need to be. Don't get stuck on the great acronym because there are literally thousands of great schools. So before I go back to SA and have a cyber drink, I will leave you with 3 things:

Remember the story of andi's son and value the importance of having a reach match and safety school (the parent mantra is love thy safety)

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=96791%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=96791</a></p>

MIT's Ben Jones post # 49 on parents forum thread who ever has the most AP wins, I wish his answer could have a separate posting of its own an be required reading

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=97255&page=3&pp=20%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=97255&page=3&pp=20</a></p>

Finally the words of fellow parent Robyrm:

*Forget random, forget unpredictable...

There is the SCIENCE of college admissions.
There is the ART of college admissions.

Art is not random. Art is not unpredictable. Art is interpretable and intangible, art is in the eye of the beholder, art is compelling, art is novel, art is honest.

The creation of the art doesn't start in the last year of high school, the creation of the art starts years before...the application is a proxy, albeit a key one, for a long and loving process. *

All the best to you as you take this wild and crazy ride.

One final thing, sit down and have the money talk with your parents. Ask them what they are willing to pay/borrow for your education. When they give you a number beleive it (don't assume that if you apply ED to a school which is notorious for not giving good aid that the money is going to suddenly show up).

OK my buzz is calling

absolutely....... CC is a place for fun and information... overahiever or underachievers this sure does not decide what u do.. infact u shud take help here and see how to improve ur own app..

and ppl at cc are gr8..very helpful... very informed....
still take all advice with a pinch of salt . .can be wrong neways

Another great thing about CC is that isn't JUST about admissions chats. Head over to the High School Forum or the CC Cafe (Community Cafe?) and you'll also find trivial, frivolous threads that can take your mind off the heaviness of the app process.

You can find some pretty great people here. :D

There are a lot of people who know a lot about colleges and programs, but when they ask for help in editing their college lists, I feel really stupid. I have basic colleges like UC-Boulder, University of Washington, U of Michigan, and U of Illinois-UC, while others have Harvard, Cornell, Swarthmore, etc.

why shud u feel stupid........ well i dont feel stupid when i see a person come 1st in my class....... why shud i... i have my place and they have theirs.......

any1 ever write a college essay about cc?

hahahah no. I'm sorry, but writing an essay about cc is even too risky for me :D

Yes -- don't feel stupid. Umichigan, uiuc, theose are all great schools! don't worry about going to harvard - just follow your passion, go to the school you know you'll be happy at, and enjoy your college life. There's so many other people in my school who don't study at all, and just slack or party all the time. Are they going to michigan or uiuc? No, they'll be going to middlesex county college. So don't ever feel inferior because you worked hard, and you'll hopefully end up going somewhere you like a lot :D

college essay on CC....yes way too risky coz colleges will knwo u have spent a lot of time here ..and take it otherwise also.......

And it is not that much of an important part also considering ppl stay here for 1-2 yr only

^I've been on cc a long time (4 years maybe?) and I think they would just think you're sad and pathetic. Which, might be true, but I don't want them to know that ;)

4 yrs................................. ghosh i am STUNNED.........

i wonder how u still are a senior member only........... yet not a moderator
