NEW SAT required?

My son is considering to apply to CMU.
On their website, the information about old SAT/new SAT is confusing.
http://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/standardized-test-requirements
Top of the page, they say old OR new. Then, on the next line they say the students are RESPONSIBLE to take new SAT.
Does that mean the new SAT is REQUIRED?
I don’t think my son will take another SAT… I feel sad if CMU decided so.
Thank you in advance.

I’d call the office of admissions for clarification, and for a possible edit to the wording on the website – it’s a bit ambiguous, I agree.

What they mean is that those choosing to take the SAT will be responsible for understanding that the test is switching to the redesigned version beginning March 2016. Think of it as a heads up and a disclosure that they expect the applicants to be on top of this format change to to prepare for it as applicable. CMU likes you to take these tests beginning Junior year which, for many of the applicants, is precisely when that new version was rolled out.

The new SAT is NOT required so if you took it earlier than March and you are happy with that score you should go ahead and submit it.

The following wording (from the website) is pretty clear as to what’s required:

“Carnegie Mellon requires either the SAT Reasoning Test, the new SAT Test, or the ACT Test from every applicant. We also require Subject Tests from most applicants - please see our Subject Test requirements by college/school below.”

Thank you, Mamelot.
