I was wondering what would a respectable Cornell sat score would be?
With the old SAT, Cornell only considered the Math and Reading portion for admission. Usually getting 700+ on both puts you in a competitive spot for admission. I would assume the same goes for this SAT as well.
Can you tell me regarding the ACT, what does Cornell consider? Do they only look at the composite score? My daughter got a 33 in math, 33 in English, and a 32 in reading, however her composite score was a 31 because of her relatively low science score of 27. Are these scores competitive for Cornell? If she takes the ACT once more and improves in science but goes down in math and/or reading, will Cornell consider her highest scores in each section?
They say (although they don’t “superscore”) that they consider the highest score in each section so retaking with a higher science score should help. It also might depend on which school or major she applies to. If CAS or engineering, then math and science should probably be a minimum of 32. Just my opinion fwiw.
Their median score is ACT is 32 and their median old SAT was 2120 (concords to 1475 new SAT).
@Renomamma Do you happen to know what the difference is between superscoring and considering the highest score in each section? I would have thought they meant the same thing.
That’s why I wrote superscore in quotation marks. It sounds like essentially the same thing to me.
@rothstem They say “consider” because someone could potentially just bomb parts of the SAT and just completely focus on one aspect. So if you got a 33 on science one time you could just bomb it the next time to put all your effort in math lets say. Super Scoring has no counter to this methodology. So saying “consider” would prevent students from doing this. (this was the only reason I could come up with)

In terms of the original discussion. I heard that top tier Universities weren’t even considering the new SAT. But that could just be a rumor.

@UglyMom Although her median score is 31, the average of the university is 32. This means that 50% of the students got scores far less than 31. So you’re daughter is well within the range of prospect for Cornell. (retaking it wouldn’t hurt either)
I would say that a 31 would be fine for Cornell. It is definitely within their range.
It really depends on the school within Cornell. Engineers tend to have higher test scores in math & science than some. Being in the top 25% of test scores is a good goal for any college. But, just do your best. There is no magic number, because each student’s background & other qualifications are unique.
Use the concordance tables. The new SAT is a little bit easier to score higher on so old CR+M isn’t equal to what your new SAT score would be.
