Does anyone know the schedule for NSO for incoming Penn frosh? they move in sept. 1st, classes start sept.7 so what do they do in between? are there a lot of social activities, food, and academic events?

https://secure.www.upenn.edu/nso/nso-events.html#/?i=1

It can be a lot of fun depending on how much you do. I wish I had done more for my orientation but there are a lot of school-sponsored events and others “sponsored” by fraternities and other groups. Take advantage of what you can and be safe.

get crunk.

Fraternities don’t sponsor any parties since they aren’t allowed per OSL rules… however, there are many parties that, coincidentally, happen at fraternity off-campus houses and are paid for by fraternities haha

Seriously though, NSO was incredible. You won’t go more than thirty seconds without something to do unless you TRY

does everyone basically attend every event? also, what events are considered the best for meeting people??

do people actually buy stuff at the ikea night thing? I feel like i’ll be the only one… haha

Dancingdoctor, you’ll realize pretty quickly what is worth going to and what isn’t. Most people go to the mandatory events, though some are just silly, and many people are entirely too hungover to wake up in time. As for social events, if it sounds interesting and cool, it probably is. There are dozens of parties every night, as well. Depending on your dorm, you will probably hang out with your suite quite often during NSO, though that will probably not continue by the time you finish freshman year (you will have campus groups that you are a part of).

powerbomb, first, sweet name. second, I didn’t even go to the Ikea thing. We cooked dinner for ourselves as a hall and then went out for the night. No regrets there.

^ so, the ‘mandatory’ events aren’t actually mandatory?

what ikea thing?? i’m lost…lol

If you look at the schedule, you’ll see that the Ikea party actually isn’t happening this year! Darn.

When they say “mandatory” they mean you have to go but if you don’t…nothing happens. I don’t want to encourage you to skip them, since I went to most of them, but you won’t get more than a talk from your RA/GA if you sleep in a day or something.

As for the ikea thing probably for the best. It was kinda stupid last year.

yeah, mandatory just means you should go to the event, and you will probably get some kind of threatening stare from your RA/GA if you skip it, but they really can’t do anything if you don’t go. And Penn knows this… you will often be split into groups to go to Zellerbach (36th and Walnut) and Irvine (34th and Spruce). If both theaters are filled to capacity, they will fit somewhere around 2350-2400 people. There are generally 2,500 in an incoming class. Do the math!
