New Student Orientation

I have already scheduled my Orientation date (which is in July) but my family has decided that we will be out of the country until August. If I cancel my reservation, is the $125 fee non-refundable (I read this somewhere and I just want to make sure)? I know for people who really can't wake during the summer, there is one on Aug. 23-24, if I do this insted of the summer Orientation, what do I have to lose? For example, I really do not care if I have to wake up at 8 as long as I take required classes and classes I want. So if I go on August, do I still get the classses I want but not the preferred time slots?

Also, my mom talked on the phone to an IU staff about this and the person told my mom that MOST first-year students go to the on August instead of the Orientation over the summer. How true is this? I find this very hard to believe.

I don’t know about the refund. The statement about skipping orientation to register in August is not accurate at all.

You will still be able to get any I-Core prerequisites you were planning to take, but they will likely be very early or very late in the day, like 8am, 9:05am and after 5:30. A100 you should be able to get a mid-day section. W131, K201, X104 type classes you will have to sign up for early or late. Finite and calculus will probably still have a few mid day sections. The better non-business electives will most likely be gone by late August.

You can look at this schedule from last fall to see typical times for open slots. Notice the most openings tend to be early and late, because IU adds early and late sections of Icore prereqs as the more attractive section times fill up. The middle column on the right is openings. This list overstates the openings because is was made after people dropped the class during the first week of classes or even later. So when you see one or two openings for sections, those were probably full the third week of August and not eligible to be signed up for.

Just sign up for the best schedule you can when you register. Then, you might be able to improve on better times for the icore prereqs it if you are willing to spend some time at it. After you sign up, look at a real time listing of class openings and do drop/adds when better time slots become available. Do the drop/add as soon as a seat in a better time slot opens up. Thousands of students take those icore prereqs and some students drop and add up to the last minute, so if you look at the real time schedules, you might be able to eliminate any 8 or 9 o’clock sections you sign up for originally and jump on a better section when it opens up, but it could be a lot of work. The drop/add changes will have small fees (beginning 48 hours after you first register) but it will be worth it to make the change if you don’t like early classes.

Here is a link to the real time schedule for all IU campuses that does not require a log-in. It is near the top of the page under “Real Time OneStart Class Search”.

I think that someone gave your mother incorrect information. The August dates are really reserved for instances such as yours when one will be unavailable for

Will we find out in advance what time my S will meet with an advisor on the second day of orientation? We would really like to be able to fly out that evening, but when he signed up for orientation, it said that it could possibly go as late as 6pm, which would make getting out that evening impossible. Will the orientation package include anything personalized with times, or do we find that out once we get there?

If I recall correctly you find out upon arrival what time the appointment is.

O.k., so I guess we’ll plan on leaving the next day. Thanks!
