New York Here

Hi everyone. I am SOOOO excited that I was accepted and there is a great chance that this is where I will be attending. I just have a few questions. First, I submitted my housing payment extremely late because this school was a slight reach for me so I didn't want to throw away $25. If I get stuck with 3 people in a double room would that be terrible? Would that be a reason to keep me away from attending? (My other option I'm considering is Maryland). I don't think that would be terrible because although it would be very tight, it increases my chance of meeting someone I will like. How many people from New York attend? I don't want to be stuck at school when everyone is going home for some weekends or holidays because I am the only one not from Florida. My other big concern is how big the school really is. Is it a closed campus. I was looking at the school on google maps and it looks like part of it is closed and part is open. For example, some buildings looked private, but the football field looks to be on a main road. I know football is huge there so how expensive are the tickets? I love how Maryland gives free basketball and football tickets to students. I'm just so scared of going to such a gigantic school and knowing absolutely nobody. I'm not a big drinker but at this school do you "have to" join a frat? Thanks so much.

Hi there,

My son is going to UF in the fall(we live in Florida but 3 + hours away) and we visted UF this past weekend. Yes it is large, but you are permitted 15 minutes between classes and most of the more popular freshman dorms are within easy walking distance to classes. Once you see the campus, at least in my opinion, you will fall in love. Old gothic brick buildings, live oaks (with moss hanging down) everywhere, tree lined streets and school pride that oozes from everywhere. It really is a beautiful campus.

The Swamp is awesome! There is a lottery for student football tickets. You pay $75 and if you win the lottery, you get a season football ticket. If you don’t win, you get back your $75 and can attempt to buy tickets from other students.

My son is not a very social person and I’m not sure if anyone he knows will be attending or not and he plans to stay on campus on weekends but come home for holidays. He also is not a drinker or partier and I doubt he will join a frat. Not everyone you meet will already be a member of a Florida high school clique but since 97% of the students are from Florida, that is pretty much what you are going to meet.

good luck in your decision!

No, you do not have to join a frat. You can lead a fullfilling life even if you don’t. There are many other opportunities for clubs in your major, social events, etc. If you work, you will find friends there - for example, the O’Connell Center hires a lot of students.
It’s a nice campus - are there prettier campuses - yes but we love walking around and exploring anytime we are there.
That said, the weather cannot be beat and I know my son doesn’t miss the Penn State weather he would have experienced had he gone there instead.
