What are your impressions of freshman year?

For those who have just completed their freshman year, can you please give me your general impressions of UF? Did it meet your expectations? How hard were the classes? How was it socially? How was your dorm? Was it easy to meet new friends? Any helpful tips?

anything else you want to add would be great. Thanks in advance

I just finished my first year at UF in April. UF definitely did meet all my expectations and more. I had a blast my first year at UF. Classes were definitely hard, and I've never studied so much in my life before. UF's campus is a very social place, everyone is usually nice and and out going. You should definitely stay in the dorms first year, you meet soooooo many people by living in the dorms and it's so much fun. One of the reasons I love UF is because it is a college town, Gainesville isn't that big but it basically revolves around UF, so most of the population are college students. Football games are amazing and excited so you should definitely try to go to one of those. [or get the season tickets].

thanks so much for the review

Was it easy to adjust to a new city and new environment? Was homesickness a factor at all, if so, how much, and if not, why?

A girl withdrew from UF last year b/c she got really homesick. Here twin sister went to FSU but her sister was handling it better than her and she decided to go back home in the middle of the semester.

I'm originally from Miami, and I did NOT want to stay in Miami for college. So, it really depends on you. I know a lot of kids who want to leave so badly and can't handle it. My friend who went to FSU left there because she got so homesick. She'd go home every weekend. My advice is to try it out. You lose nothing leaving home and actually being on your own for once. I love that I have a life now at UF. I did get a lil homesick, but not to the point it depressed me. I'm actually looking foward to go back in the Fall. It really does depend on the person.

uf gators,

how large were your freshman classes? if they were large, was that difficult to deal with?

what courses did you take? what dorm did you live in?

My freshmen classes:

Psycho (upper level) = 120
Chemistry = 250
Chem Lab = 25
Calculus 1 = 200-300 (not sure)

other classes:
theater appr. = 700
stats = 700 or online or at recording session (30)
orgo = 180
calc 2 = 25

Pre-Calculs - around 800 students
Intro To Chem - around 250 students
Architectural History - around 600 students
Chemistry 1 - around 250 students
Intro to Music Lit - around 150 students
Intro to Health Professions - around 600 students...maybe more
Stats Lecture - the auditorium can fit up to at least 800 but because it is an online class, most people just watch the lectures online, from what I hear there are atleast 2,000 students enrolled in statistics during Fall and Spring

Youre first two years, youre going to have HUGE classes for your gen ed classes and intro classes, once you get deeper into your major, they become smaller. English classes like ENC1101 and ENC1102 are small, maybe 15 students max. It is intimidating to be in an auditorium full with students, but Professors have office hours so use those wisely.
