I got into UF yesterday, one of my top choices. my sis goes there, its closer to home, i am familiar with the school, i know a lot of people who are planning to go, it would be cheaper, and i could probably double major in history and photography.

I also applied to Nyu early decision, and I am expecting that decision in a few days. The office of admissions said I could withdraw my application or change it to regular decision as long as I did it before the early decision acceptances/rejections go out. so I only have a few days left...

If I go to nyu--it'd be great living in nyc. there would be so many opportunities, I would have to make all new friends, but I wouldnt be able to do history and photography both. I'd probably major in history and just take open arts photography classes since there is no minor in photography offered.

If I do get in I'd have to go. Its a great school don't get me wrong but I just dont want to make the change unless I'm sure. I want to know what everyone thinks. '

It’s a personal choice. I would straight up prefer UF (UF is not my top choice, I am just not fond of NYU). But yes, take finances into account. NYU is WORLD FAMOUS for getting students in binding agreements and shafting them with $200,000 in debt. Little merit aid and THE WORST financial aid in the country. If you love the city, love NYU, and can afford it WITHOUT aid, don’t withdraw. If the first two, but not the last, I suggest changing it to RD.

Agreed, though Harvard at least has the decency to mitigate its ridiculous cost with the best financial aid in the country. NYU costs more, with very little aid. There were horror stories and news articles posted here last year about students being 200k in debt and wanting to give their diploma back and get ride of the debt.

the biggest problem is that I probably won’t be ale to transfer to UF if I don’t like it

from the UF website: “Many students enter the University of Florida in the junior year as transfer students. Eligible transfer applicants must be in good academic standing at the institution(s) attended and must have completed 60 or more transferable semester hours from a regionally accredited institution, or an AA degree from an in-state public community college, or 60 transferable semester credits of course work listed in the Florida Statewide Course Numbering System from a Florida nonpublic postsecondary institution.
Prospective transfers from Florida public community colleges can refer to the FACTS Common Prerequisite Manual for state university transfer prerequisite course requirements. Transfer applicants who meet UF minimum admission requirements will be referred to the appropriate UF college for an admission decision. Applicants who exceed minimum requirements are most competitive for admission at the junior level, if space is available.”

I would definitely change it to RD. I also had the option of going 200k in debt, and I am very glad I went to UF. If your dad’s an oil tycoon, then maybe you would want to go to NYU.

Unless your family is well-off enough to comfortably defray all NYU expenses…and it is EXPENSIVE, I’d strongly urge you to reconsider as someone who turned down NYU’s admission offer 10+ years ago and a NYC native.

If your sole or one main reason for considering NYU is the above, you can easily do that after graduating from UF by working and living in NYC.

More importantly, you’d be able to do so without the crushing debt many high school classmates and younger friends have been enduring as a result of attending NYU.

If you must go to NYU, you can also consider going there for grad school. In fact, that’s where their real strengths lie and where you’ll get more benefits from the star faculty.

Change to RD for sure. That’s what I did. I still ended up getting accepted to NYU, and now I’m at UF lol. IMO NYU isn’t worth the money, but you should look at all the factors that are important to you about a school and then make up your mind. If you’re unsure, which you obviously are, potentially being stuck in an ED agreement would be bad.

Change for RD. ED is great if you are sold on a school, and have thought about all of the consequences. However, it seems as though UF is a great substitution for you, and RD will still get you an acceptance, in all likelihood, but it will not arm-twist you into going there. Besides, it will leave you with the decision, not NYU’s adcom.

Wow, I appreciate all of this feedback SO much. I will probably end up changing to reg decision tomorrow afternoon.

And about the “offensive, unwarranted comment” – I am really not offended by it. I am probably going to go to law school for graduate, so I just want to get a good liberal arts education and study history a little more and explore my interest in photography as an undergrad.
