New York Jazz Safety Schools. The City College of New York

I am looking for insights City College. In terms of education, how does it compare to The New School and The Manhattan School of Music? Is it know for gerous scholarships? Is it in a relatively safe area of the City when compared to MSM and the New School?

City College is on the top end of Harlem nearing Washington Heights. It isn’t nearly as nice/safe an area as either MSM or New School, (especially New School), which are both in great neighborhoods. It isn’t scary though. The campus itself is really beautiful.

It isn’t known for big scholarships, given it is a CUNY school and is a tremendous bargain to begin with. The biggest expense, even for out-of-State students, will be housing. As with the SUNY schools, merit scholarships tend to be heavily need informed. It has excellent studio teachers, (John Patitucci used to teach bass there, though I don’t think he does anymore.) and the program has expanded in recent years. The curriculum is much the same as most schools, but I can’t speak to its rigor. If your son really wants to be in NYC, it is definitely worth looking into.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. He does really want to be in NY. We visited MSM and the New School, he especially like The New School.
