My son is looking for a New York college where he can study music in general and guitar specifically.
Since he's just 17, he's not sure yet if he wants to perform, teach, get into the business end or study music therapy. He is not particularly interested, though, in classical music.
We're hoping he'll choose a SUNY school
Would you suggest SUNY Potsdam, Fredonia or Oneonta?
Or would you suggest a different school?
Thanks.

I personally know nothing about this but my cousin was interested in the music school at Brooklyn College for guitar. He visited and liked it there. It could be a completely classical program though.

I have a son who is a jazz guitar student, starting at New England Conservatory in the Fall. For a SUNY I would highly recommend Purchase. The guitar teachers are Doug Munro and John Abercrombie. If your son is interested in jazz, this is the SUNY to check out. Other than that, look at The New School for Jazz in the city. Contemporary or rock guitar is much harder to find, and for that, people generally look to Berklee College of Music in Boston. If you have more questions, you can PM me. I spent last year researching guitar programs with my son.

If he is seriously thinking about music therapy, Fredonia is the only one of the above (I'm pretty sure) with that program. Potsdam and Fredonia are the only SUNYs with Music Ed.

You might consider William Paterson in NJ as well- they are a NJ State school but, depending on his audition, he might get in-state tuition. They have a great jazz program and are pretty close to NYC.
