New York Musical Festival

Tomorrow is the non-Equity open audition day for NYMF. The 300 spots were filled via the online sign-up in 15 seconds! If anyone here was fortunate enough to get a spot, break a leg!

That’s as bad as trying to get Hamilton tickets when they went on sale… though no one trying to resell their spots for $3,000!

Yet.

ugh… BUT - at least they did online sign-ups and no one had to get up at a ridiculous hour to get in line. Oh this business…

Yes, the kid auditioned for Hamilton the other week–5 hours in the rain and cold. People were in line from the night before. CRAY CRAY!! If she had somewhere to stay in NYC for a month, she would’ve done the NYMF open call.

Yes, the numbers are daunting, and always will be in this business. And if that’s not bad enough, those 300 non-Eq actors will be competing for probably a minority of roles in each production, after Equity and represented non-Eq actors who have had agent submissions for auditions.

I wonder - how many of the 300 will get work out of it? If only 30 of them do that would still be WAY higher than many of the college programs we talk about here…

My now-AEA son did non-eq NYMF signups and auditioned and got hired last year. My non-eq son got a spot in the 15-second race the other night. He was poised and ready to pounce right at 11:30 or whenever it was. CRAY.

Note, they also see Equity members at different calls, appts.

@MTTwinsinCA Yes, that was what I meant in my post about agent submissions. I see how that may not have been clear. BAL to your son!

They ended up seeing 400 at Pearl today. A long and, hopefully, fruitful day!

Can you explain what this is, who it’s for etc…thanks.

@Joyfulmama, NYMF is the New York Musical Festival – a summer tradition in NYC. The festival runs a couple weeks and features dozens of new musicals in smaller theatres. It’s a legit off-Broadway credit and actors of all ages and stages audition for the casting directors who are casting multiple shows. The festival operates under a festival/showcase code for Equity, so AEA members can take part at a low rate and they can also hire non-eq for a stipend. It is a fun, short-term gig in the slow summer season and sometimes NYMF shows go on and have a bigger life. FYI: “Next To Normal” is one show that came out of NYMF a few summers back. Google it for more info. For younger actors, it’s a great way to be seen in NYC…but as you’ve read, getting an audition slot can be challenging.

Thank you @MTTwinsinCA … I have a D who is a dancer working on increasing her equity points, and my younger D who is headed to UTampa BFA MT this Fall. So all this is newish to me and I appreciate the info.
