New York, New York, it's a hell of a town...

Wow, I'm going to New York City for the very first time tomorrow! My roommate is dragging me to go clubbing with her at night and I'm not a club type of person. Does anybody have any suggestions of one that I might be comforatable with (for a first timer)?
Thanks!

The greatest city on the face of the planet!! Just let it all out...forget about all your college stresses and have fun.

Tip: avoid subways past 1AM

Keep your money separate from your wallet, and in inside pockets. Keep large bills in one pocket and small ones in another. Enjoy ;)

Wear your best clothes as in be the sexiest you can be. The bouncers here are notorious although if you wanna just go to any club it wont be a problem. For the best ones tho look at good as you possible can.
Also dont worry about bing robbed. If you dont go into some shady neighborhood nothing will happen.
Have fun.

lol, all this precautionary nonsense. I live here in the city and ive never been mugged or assaulted once. I've taken the subways at pretty late hours too, nothin happening. My best advice is to keep someone with you. That alone should be deterrent enough. There are some crazy people in this city, but they're all cool. The East Village is the coolest place in the city, hands down.

I live in the city and I also have never been mugged or assulted or any of the other BS. My advice still stands tho. Dress to kill or else you will be shut out from the good clubs. And yes East Village is awesome although I like some parts of downtown (tribeca and soho to be exact).

I know Im a little late, but i hope you had fun in the city..I love living here, greatest place ever. and to the person that said "Tip: avoid subways past 1AM" Thats complete BS, you dont know what youre talking about. I've taken the subway at 230 by myself and its been fine..people are always on the train, and nothing has happened.

&(&6!##! blah, if you all had told me before I left..WHY DIDN'T I WEAR MY PINK PEACOAT!!! Like all the women there had the cutest peacoats I wish I wore mine! I sure did dress to kill, the mirror. I wore something casual but my main purpose was to keep warm but everyone else looked great, yorkers sure do have style.
It freakin sucked though, all the good looking guys were gay. It was that or they had the most beautiful girlfriends no plastic surgeon could ever duplicate. IM SO RELIEVED that we did not go to a club. The girls had to be 18 and the guys 21 so they could not go in. I went with my roommate, some other girl, and 7 guys. The only person I knew well was my roommate so I did not feel comfortable with the rest of them. We got a hotel room and the 9 of us stuffed ourselves in.
The guys acted like fools when we first got there. They got drunk at the hotel and then almost got into a fight with some guys in times square. We walked everywhere. The city never sleeps, we were roaming around at like 3 in the morning and there are as much people walking around as in Chicago at noon. I wish I went in all the big stores (my favorites Forever 21, H&M...) they were HUGE but we had to follow wherever the guys went. We did finally get to go to the Manhattan Mall and I bought 5 thongs for $10 at Wet Seal, and everybody needed to know that.
So we got several things accomplished like going up the Empire State building, seeing the big Christmas Tree and going to Times Square. No clubs and no ice skating though (yes!)
Still upset about the peacoats and no single guys.
im done, leave me alone

Yea peacoats seem to be in this year. Where did you go to? Yes many guys here are gay but there shouldnt be a disproportionate amount unless you headed to west village. Next time head to the east!

I completely agree. I am from NYC, and its pretty safe. That is just the false idea that people have of NY

As long as you're sensible, NYC is very safe for its size. Don't forget, the dangerous areas are uptown, the Bronx, and parts of Queens. Midtown and downtown Manhattan are perfectly safe.

Thanks, I did have a good time in NYC but I would have a better time with a different group of people. I felt very safe there actually. It is a very classy area and a lot of security. You did not need to blow off money to go shopping though. The stuff can be pricy but I spent most of my money on food. We saw a lot of people in limos and great outfits. I wish I was a uptown girl, that would be the life.

wtf, i live in the bronx. "uptown" is dangerous? where the hell are you from?

I lived in NYC before I moved to Singapore.....and all the talk that NYC is a crime-ridden **** hole is bull-crap. I was never mugged or had any problems with thugs, and I went to Bronx by subway everyday to go to school. And upper Bronx is quite safe in fact....NYC really comes alive in christmas, you gotta see the christmas nutcracker at the radio city hall, go to see the biggest christmas tree at the rockfeller and ice skate, go to fifth avenue to see all the designer shops, central park snow, go to empire state building and shop at Macy's.....and I left out all the good food, museums, and other good stuff.

I have a friend whose cousin lived in New York. One night her cousin decided to take the subway to get home (she had a night shift that day). She sat across two guys and a very pale girl who sat in between the two guys. Oddly, the two guys were pushing against the girl. After a while, she realized the girl in between the two guys continuously stared ahead and never blinked. Frightened, she decided to get off at the next stop. It turned out the girl in between the two guys was dead and the dudes were the murderers.

This story still gives me goosebumps!

OMG that is scary

I've been to NYC a lot of times but have never been mugged or anything, although my cousin was groped by some pervert on the subway coming home from work one day. These things happen in big cities I guess

Mugged?...o god..I live in the city and it rocks..your not gonna get mugged ..and that hwole put ur money in ur inside pocket blah blah..thats bs..umm yes dress to kill def..btw there are just soo many clubs..maybe u can check out china club or webster hall?..and the trains rock..doesnt matter what time as long as your with ppl..buh bye have fuN!

i always thought people would be more likely to get mugged in downtown los angeles and not that much in manhattan

A friend whose cousin...

Sure...
