New York University or UCSD

Hi,
I am honestly really torn-I want to be thinking about how fun college will be and the great times I will have, but I have the tremendous pressure of deciding where to go based on several factors such as: finances, flexibility of major, and general quality of life.

The story is that I got into NYU LSP program, but received no financial aid-my family has a lot of stock saved up at the moment-and for UCSD I got about 5k in aid but am an instate resident so it is significantly cheaper. I had my heart set on NYU because I loved the image of being in the city and making connections there. Also it would set me up well for getting a degree in law if I needed up going to CAS or steinhart, but I can't have my parents pay that much for it (probably 25k) and I would take out loans on the rest. Although my mom is planning on buying a house soon, which will eat up her stock but it is doubtful I will receive any significant amount of aid from NYU-at most 25k if I do very well in school from my college consoler's perspective.

For UCSD I did a lot of research and found that their engineering program is amazing and I saw my self on another path. I came up with the idea of switching from sociology and law at ucsd to mechanical engineering with a minor in communications and then apply to grad school or getting a job in the bay area( where I am from) with a high starting salary. All of this being relatively cheap and with virtually no student debt.

Do you guys have any recommendations, advice, or things to keep in mind that may contribute to my final decision?

If NYU is going to be prohibitively expensive without taking out tons of loans, then it’s not worth it. I would make sure that you can switch at UCSD though, because aren’t some majors impacted are really difficult to get into?

I already checked with UCSD it most likely wouldn’t be a problem-my grades a pretty high, but your right most engineering majors are impacted. Just for the sake of asking how was your experience with NYU financial aid and CAS in general?

I’m not super familiar with how financial aid works (family wasn’t eligible), but I wouldn’t count on a substantial aid revision in your FA after your mom buys a house, because NYU is notoriously stingy. As far as the benefits of being here, yes, you can make connections here, but if you’re creative, you can do it anywhere. It sounds like you have a solid plan for UCSD, and I don’t see NYU having that much of an advantage for you over UCSD, particularly if it means that you can graduate without piles of debt
