Newark or New Brunswick? (for business)

Hello everyone,

I've seen several similar threads like this but I haven't seen any that directly address my questions and concerns.

First, some background:
I plan on transferring to Rutgers from an in-state community college. I've already completed 60 credits and I'm all set to graduate with my associates. I would like to study Supply Chain Management and I've already been accepted into the Business School in New Brunswick for fall 2013 and I'm still pending for Newark and Camden (not planning on attending Camden) as of this posting.

Now for the concerns:
All of my professors and advisers that I've spoken to have told me that Newark offers a much better business program than New Brunswick. I've heard mixed things from my peers, though. I've heard that New Brunswick is really the "main" campus as far as business goes and that they're more selective, giving NB a sense of prestige to future employers. I've also heard that New Brunswick is less transfer-friendly, meaning that I'll probably have to take some courses over even though my credits transfer.

I want to go where I'm going to have the best likelihood of being placed into a job and getting a better education.

How bad is the area around Newark? I would also like to live on (or relatively near) my campus, as I haven't lived away from home yet. Obviously this raises safety concerns. I know that both campuses have a hefty police force that is present almost all the time, but I'm not sure if that justifies being in Newark a lot. I live fairly close to NB so I know the campus area there pretty well, but I've never been to Newark. Is it really as bad as some students say it is?

Any and all advice is appreciated. I'm having a really tough time making this choice and all other reviews seem to point towards NB.

Edit: If anyone has information about whether either school receives more financial aid than the other, I'd like to know that as well. Thanks!

no offense but both Rutger buisness schools are pretty much not all that. However, out of the two Newark is better. I have a cousin who graduated from Newark and now works for the big four. However, if you want to study supply chains i reccomend Michigan State or Penn state UP

I definitely appreciate the quick response- what makes you say that? Personal experience?

I’ll definitely check out Michigan and Penn, to be honest I haven’t looked that far out of NJ but they’re definitely not out of the question.

Well the knowledge comes from rankings and what i have heard. i am a NJ high school student so most of my family attend RU and i heer alot about it from them. Most of them are buisness students as well. Penn State is amazing when it comes to buisness. its a top 20 program!

NB is the better business school. All it takes is a quick look at the admissions stats to see that the NB Business School is far more selective than the Newark Business School.

I will be attending Newark campus. I hope it is a great experience. Good luck!

@SoDoMojo: Does the fact that it’s more selective make it more appealing on a resume?

@Jonathan1991: Congrats! I hope so as well- did you have similar concerns?

University Heights is about average for most of Newark: high crime, mostly gang or drug related, and carjackings. Just be smart, don’t involve yourself in the game, and you’ll be fine.

Not nearly as much college life at Newark as in New Brunswick, according to what I’ve heard.

matter a fact i just came back from NEW Brunswick today and the place is dead! The kids there rock schools shirts of other institutions so you can tell there is no school pride. The building’s are not nice at all and i found the campus to be dirty.

@Billyg0at1991 - There is always a correlation between selectivity and how a business school (or any school for that matter) is perceived. There may not be much of a comparison when the difference in selectivity is minor, but like I said the admission stats between the two campuses are considerably different.

New Brunswick Bus / Newark Bus
SAT: 1880-2090 / 1600-1770
ACT: 28-32 / 23-26
GPA: 3.6-4.0 / 3.2-3.7
Rank: 85-96 / 66-87

I do have the same concerns. Im still not 100 percent sure if Newark would be better, but my friends go there so I’m thinking it’s not that bad.

@AltoSaxPlayer: Yea, that’s pretty much what I’ve heard. It’s kinda worrying, especially since I plan to live fairly close by.

@EChoudhu: Yea, I guess it’s just like any other school in that sense. I was there last week and it seemed fine, but I’ve never actually been in any of the academic buildings. I’ve only been in some of the dorms, the student center, and the library.

@SoDoMojo Thanks, those stats and rating actually do help a lot. I was originally planning for Newark but each time a research and hear things like that I find that I’m leaning a little more towards NB.

@jonathan1991: Thanks for the honesty- I’m sure there’s a way to go about daily activities to minimize risk and everything. You have to know the area I suppose.

Btw (since I didn’t make it clear), Rank is Class Rank %, not business school ranking.
