Anyone involved with the Colgate Catholic ministry? How active/vibrant is the group?

I was a part of the Colgate Newman Community, and it is definitely a great organization to be a part of. Mark Shiner is the Catholic Chaplain and he has helped create a wonderful Catholic, as well as religious, community. Sunday Mass had attendance around 150 or so each week, and people would hang around afterwards and socialize. There’s definitely a lot of opportunities to get involved in volunteering and leadership roles. Please let me know if you have more questions because the Newman Community was a large part of my Colgate experience and I LOVED it!!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It’s good to know there is an active community. Is the Catholic church in town within walking distance of campus? Did you ever attend Mass there?

I believe they have a Catholic mass in the chapel on campus. I remember reading this. Protestant services also in chapel, either before or after the Catholic mass.

The Church in town is called St. Mary’s and is about a 20ish minute walk from most of the freshman dorms. I did attend a Palm Sunday service there my freshman or sophomore year(so about 3 years ago), and the service was pretty nice. That was the only time that I did attend service there, mostly because service on campus was a lot more convenient than going to St. Mary’s. I also really liked the priest on campus, he definitely tailored his sermons to the student population.

Thank you so much! I appreciate your help. I’m sure I’ll have more questions later.
