"Next Generation" of College Confidential Here Already? (FALL 2010 Transfers)

The second essay prompt is horrible. How does one respond to such a prompt without sounding conceded?! This is going to take a lot of thought…

I just submitted my application to my ultra super super safety school CSUN. Now if only I could write these personal statements I would be done with the UC application ><.

russell burgos. does anyone know him?

If any of you guys were involved heavily in ECs during high school, are you planning on mentioning them in the EC section?

I know they’re not very important for transfers, and what you do mention should be recent, but I have not done much outside of studying at CC. I’d hate to leave it bone dry.

Malak, have you had a job before?? That could be considered an EC cause it’s showing responsibility.

A good hint for this is that the admission people wont even check you can make some stuff up and they wont be searching if your lying or not. I wrote about tutoring, and no offense I ve never done that so I think you can get away with it if you put in the time to think about what to say. and no dont leave it blank if you havent done much make something up.

i am going to disagree…if you havent done it…DO NOT MAKE IT UP!

How about if they DO check your personal statement if you’re a borderline admittant? You’ll be one sad panda…(especially some schools like Cal)

If your going to make up something (not like i’m suggesting you make up something at all), make it small.

the fact that some of you guys are even contemplating making things up in your application says a lot about you.

i don’t think they’d check the personal statement, i’m under the impression that they randomly choose 1 activity/award to verify from every 1 out of 10 applications…not the individual campuses but the uc system as a whole…

Snooks, I worked at my family’s restaurant most of last year, so I’ll be mentioning that, but I haven’t done much else. At CC, I’m a no-name in one club and I’ve got no volunteer work or internship experience, but I was president of a big volunteer club in high school and I really don’t want to leave the EC section empty.

I’m just curious if it means anything to them if I mention somehting I lead 2 years ago, or if I’m better off just mentioning what little I’ve done lately and letting my grades do the rest of the talking.

I’m putting way too much thought into this EC section lol. The UC Berkeley representative that visited my school recently even said that ECs are only important for borderline candidates, but I can’t help but think that this budget crisis has made us all borderline candidates.

hey guys, well it depends on luck and just going for it. I got into my dream school ucla by making stuff up. Now, I understand that maybe it’s not a good idea since I did make stuff up, I actually made a lot of it to be honest, and perhaps in the future admission people will check what you do. I’ll be honest, I don’t think I would have gotten into ucla by NOT making things up but then again who knows. Bottom line do what’s best for you however you may feel. I for instance, talked about being in a few clubs (I just went once) and about other extracurriculars I didnt do.

Hey everyone! First post here. Haha, yes the next generation is here. I’ve been lurking around these forums for the past week trying to get some info about transferring to various UCs.

I can’t wait! I wish it was already Fall '10… I started working on my app, I only have my personal statement left. I heard they don’t even read them for transfers especially if you do TAG. :)

hey i got a question… when we’re updating the courses we are taking throughout this year, do we get the chance to change some courses we don’t end up taking?
and where do we put down the courses we have already taken before this fall? dang i feel so dumb cuz i feel like im the only one struggling with this…

Yes, Beo, later you get to update your winter and spring classes and grades. On UC app, #4 Academic History, keep going to part 3 and you list your entire course history. Trust me, you’re not the only one who is frustrated and it’s not even November yet!

@MrRevelle - I kind of hope they read them, I’ve been spending a lot of time on mine! :)

I’m in a predicament!!! Help please!!!

I am currently taking 17.5 Units, and my geology class, which I anticipated would be an easy “A” is now the biggest burden ever. I’m not doing well, due to my devotion to other classes, and I think it would be best to drop the class. I have one “W” on my record already, and this would add two more, seeing as I have the lab as well. Will 3 W’s totally make me a less competitive candidate for admission to Cal and UCLA? (I’ve already got a a TAG with UCSD)

Thanks guys! Hope you’re all doing better than I am!

@theregoesevan - I think a W is better than an F, but when you say “not doing well”, what grade do you think you’ll end up with?

@evan
A>B>W>D>F>C

You should also consider how dropping this class would affect your performance in other classes.

I’m thinking a “C,” but i’m just not getting it.

I dropped the classes.

Should be good.

Thanks guys!
