"Next Generation" of College Confidential Here Already? (FALL 2010 Transfers)

Oh wow. I’m in SMC’s TAP and I did not know you had to complete 15 units by Fall. I just need one more class. But still, that’s lame. ):

Game_theory: They were people who were flat out rejected. I believe SMC has a 90%-98% TAP acceptance rate that fluctuates by year.

Sephorazn18: I think she said it to console people whose faces dropped because they weren’t fully aware that TAP wasn’t guaranteed admission and some people did get rejected from UCLA. She did mention that it does not give any priority whatsoever for Berkeley, but given two identical applicants and only one spot, the honors courses would become more significant. But basically it would be like an EC like PTK or something in Cal’s eyes.

I have an appointment with Aileen Parungao (the Berkeley rep) soon. Is she nice? I’m gonna ask her about Berkeley’s TAP program.

Berkeley does not have a TAP like UCLA does, but they do have this thing called “Transfer Alliance Project” (also ‘TAP’). I don’t really know the details and it’s not well-known at all, but you should check it out. SMC is included in this Project (I think).

Game_theory,

I met with Aileen and she’s very nice (very pretty too). The thing about Berkeley’s TAP, is that you either have to be the first in your family to go to college or have a very low income. I met with her the other day and she pretty much just goes over some of the numbers with you and she’ll tell you if you’re a qualified applicant or not.

I’m pretty low income, actually. Should I bring any specific documents, just so I don’t have to come back twice to apply? Did she discuss some of the perks and stuff about Berkeley’s TAP? I don’t really know much about it… is there some priority given during the application process for people in the program?

I’m not too sure about the perks of TAP, but I remember seeing somewhere that you get your own personalized counselors, and that CAL TAP students have a 90% admit rate, so take that for what it’s worth. I would bring documents just in case as well.

Did you guys hear about the new memo the counselors got? I just went over to express counseling yesterday, and they told me they couldn’t up my units for the summer because of a combination of cuts and too many students this year. ***? I at least wanted an extra 2 units so I could take calc and accounting this summer, and now it seems that won’t happen. The counselor told me what I could do is go on the first day, hope there’s a spot (and we know there’s little guarantee there), get an add code, then talk to the counselor to add the class.

I’m gonna set up an appointment with a real counselor to see if they’ll budge.

What did you want your unit cap to be? Mines at 11 for the summer.

I wanted 13, but at the least 10. If I can’t even get 10 then my whole schedule is messed up, and I may not even finish all of my prereqs by next spring if they continue to be stubborn with their units policy.

I go to fullerton college, and we can take up to 19 units in the summer. However, you may need to commit suicide if you plan on taking 19 units over the summer! I want to take a lot of units but I don’t think i can handle 19.

any of you smc kids know if persian fills up during the fall? im going to apply to ucla as iranian studies and need persian. Since i dont go to smc, my appt to register for fall as at the end of registration. Just seeing if this class historically fills up or not?

Persian? I doubt it.

However, the classes I need to sign up for definitely fill up quick.

^ darn that sucks for u . . good luck with it all . . i feel like class offerings are getting cut 40% while students who want classes are rising about 20%. That means that it is getting 60% harder to get into the same class from a year ago. Not great odds if you ask me. Look at me, I live in north oc and got to drive to smc for this class ! !!

Yeah, and on top of that I have a horrible enrollment date for the summer and fall (a week after it starts). And how come you commute such a long way to go to SMC? OC has a few good CCs.

well i go to orange coast college, but i need persian since it is a prereq for my major. My choice is southwestern in chula vista or smc. so im going to try for both and see where my heart takes me. Im thinking chula vista in sd might be more interesting since i want to go to ucla and will be up there alot as of fall '10

CRASH THE CLASS!

it’ll work.

i promise.

I have a friend with an earlier enrollment date who’s willing to “hold” the classes for me, but he already took most of the same classes and it won’t let you sign up for the same class twice. Argh…

Personally, I hate to crash classes on the first day. Normally there’s so many people (esp. during the summer) that the instructor just picks from a lottery or outright decides not to add anyone.

Blue&Gold- I’d Stick with SMC. I live in San Diego and I don’t even go to Southwestern. (I go to City and Mesa). SMC is far better and probably closer.

SMC people, how are your enrollment dates?
I have May 12th at 12PM. Is that good or will I not get some of the classes I want? (first semester)

I also found out they need to evaluate the English 1 from my old school and need a syllabus. I honestly don’t remember my 90 year old teacher giving us a paper syllabus…he still uses a typewriter and told us not to bother emailing him because he never checks it. Ugh, looks like I’m taking English 1 again. Anyone take Meyer?
