"Next Generation" of College Confidential Here Already? (FALL 2010 Transfers)

All philosophy classes? LOL - good luck. That is, unless you like that stuff. ;)

One of the counselors shot me down for 3 classes this summer thinking it’d be too difficult…wow -___-

I want to do 6 or 7 classes this fall though and have a light load next spring and parrrrtay.

Lol I do…
ARENT YOU NERVOUS?!! We apply in November! Gah…
Erikuh joined our convo…nice

Haha yeah late jump in…

I totally had a dream last night that UC apps were due the next day and I hadn’t started on my essays at all.

CC is getting to me lol.

Which counselor did you talk to? You know, so I don’t talk to the same one. lol

I dunno if they rotate or whatever, but I’m heading over to express counseling for sure since I don’t need a 30 minute appointment.

Hopefully I can get my 13 units for this summer approved. I can outlast 8 weeks of a tough courseload if it’ll take some pressure off the fall and spring semester (which it will in a HUGE way). I can’t wait to take Japanese in the fall…

Lol I hear ya…I want to take a break from this site but at the same time I’m interested in seeing what the avg. GPA of admits were… How are you guys doing on the foreign language requirement? Is it 2 semesters or 3?

Dam 13units in the summer I’m surprised your CCC would let you. I just got approved for up 11units at my CCC for this summer but our summer session is only 6weeks.

How many units does your CCC allow during the fall? I had to be persuasive to my counselor to approve up to 25units for this fall.

The Hispanic counselor lady with the reddish hair in the welcome center (it’s my first semester here).

I mean if I can survive Intro to Molecular Pharmocogenics amongst 18 credits at my old school, I can take 21 credits (including COUNS 20 C’MON!?!?) at SMC.

Wow why are you guys stacking so many units for Fall?! If I take 11 during the summer and 16 during Fall I’ll have over 60 already lol
Ah right, you guys are probably science or bus majors…

Biz Econ major here. Honestly the only reason I’m staking units is to boost my GPA since they look at your grades up to the fall. Also my class will be 5-6 G.E. and Calculus 110A for the fall. Next spring I’m only taking 12units just to be full time and get my Veterans money.

Well, I haven’t gotten the 13 units approved yet, but I’m sure I will with enough persuasion.

Not sure how much is the max for the fall, but it’s only 16 units without a petition. I’m taking 17 units this semester (definitely wish I took more now). But if I take 13 units in the summer, I’ll be taking 16 in the fall, 6 in the winter, and 17 in the spring, so my schedule isn’t too bad…

As for foreign language, you only need two years from high school or one semester in college.

Just came out of a TAP scholars orientation and wanted to share some info about SMC’s TAP that I found interesting.

This year, 1800 SMC students applied to UCLA.

This year so far they’ve heard of 8 rejections of certified people out of 200.

Communications is NOT certified. (I was surprised!)

Even if you make the 3.0 cut to be in the program, it’s not a guarantee that you’ll be certified. The lady in charge said that in late February/March she goes through all the scholars students who applied and sets a GPA for certification depending on the major. For example this year, she only certified economics majors this past year with at least a 3.0 pre-req GPA and 3.5 overall major GPA. She said last year out of 350 scholars students, she certified 200 (some didn’t keep up a 3.0, some didn’t do the 15 credits, and some didn’t have a certain GPA for the major).

Many of the TAP students who got rejected this year from UCLA got into Berkeley.

That’s all I can remember right now but I’m pretty happy I applied for TAP.

Wow I saw some Anthro majors here…this is a first. Where have all you people been?

Thinking of History or Anthro myself. Wow, I’m still shocked.

erikuh: Do the rejections include people who were rejected from their primary major but got into their secondary major? Because I know of a few people who were rejected from their first choice and were TAP certified.

I’m still irked that SMC requires all honors credit to be done by the fall. Seriously, what the hell?

Game_theory: I’m still irked that SMC requires all honors credit to be done by the fall. Seriously, what the hell?

Seriously, for that reason alone I don’t think I’m going to be certified. I mean, every other school just has to complete the units by Spring! What classes are you taking right now?

TAP has no effect on Cal admissions…so I don’t really see a correlation.

Actually, I wouldn’t necessarily say that, sephorazn?

I got into CAL with a GPA far lower than many other people without UCLA tap. I dont think there is no straight correlation but more of an indirect. In order to qualify for TAP at my school, you have to take Honors courses. Because I took 5 of them and noted on my CAL update that “I am done with the Honors Transfer Program” - they probably saw that and realized i stood out. That is the only explanation i have as to how i got accepted.

What was your GPA / Major applied?
It might have an indirect benefit but Cal does not recognize your honor classes. You noted it on your EC’s right?

3.74 -Political Science
i know people who had better ec’s, 3.8+, more classes completed, the whole bunch better than me and got rejected. do note i also got an B for one of the major preqs CAL requires.

No, i literally noted on the application + UC Grade update + CAL grade update for each of the honors classes - “Honors - International Relations, Honors - Business Law” etc etc.

Then in the “Comments” box, I wrote that I finished the Honors Transfer Program and stuff.

So like I said, i think UCLA TAP has an indirect effect.

3.74 Political Science is competitive. The honor classes didn’t “carry” you through. I talked to Eileen Parungao, the Cal transfer advisor and she said any TAP honor classes taken will be listed as part of your EC’s.
