zmmother:
Our daughter just completed her freshman year at ND. We are from Southern California. PM me and I will be happy to fill you in on move in weekend. The University - and Bed Bath and Beyond - have the process down to a science. It is a really exciting weekend to be on campus!

^sounds like a conflicted relationship by your username.

i came from rhode island and i went to a bed bath and beyond at my house and all you do is scan everything you want and then when you get to south bend you go to the bed bath and beyond there and literally pick up everything. very effective. i recommend flying out and buying everything when you get there. There is a mass on sunday i believe. It is not a closing mass but for me at least this was when my parents left so it was a closing mass for me i guess. orientation will linger on sunday night into monday morning and parents usually leave sometime on sunday. monday is a day off and tuesday classes start. move in is staggered so you may be allowed to move in at 9 or 11 depending on your floor number. it will take the first day with minor changes happening for the rest of the weekend.

Hi Freshman ND parents - and also thanks to everyone who’s been on this site this year helping us out. I have been lurking and learning and it’s been so helpful. My son is starting this fall and couldn’t be more excited. He spent a week each of the past 2 summers at ND (through ND Vision) and so is a bit familiar with campus etc. but hasn’t a clue about what he’ll need (and, since I stayed home for college, neither do I!) Will he get a list, or will he get a chance to contact his roommate to confer on who’s bringing what etc?
So excited for Move-in weekend. This has been his dream since he first set foot on campus in 2008, and seeing him fulfill that dream after having worked for it is so emotional for all of us! Congratulations to all of you!

Mommysusan, any list you get will likely come directly from your son’s dorm. I believe you will be getting that info in a month or so but I am not too sure. You will also get a roommate assignment the same time you find out your dorm. Res life will provide the roommate’s name and and I believe e-mail.

Thanks Irish45221. FYI freshman parents, in case you didn’t get it yet, First Year of Studies packet came yesterday together with with all the info for Move-In weekend - wow, lots to do!

yes there is a lot to do but do not be overwhelmed - do everything as early as possible - if you put it aside you may very well forget it - lists and packets from your dorm and you are provided your roommates email - though facebook is the easiest way to find him/her … some quick advice for things to bring:

1) Fan - if dorm is not A/C - two can be even better
2) Forks/Knives/Spoons/Bowls - usually parents will leave some food behind, but nothing is more frustrating when you go to eat an easy-mac with no spoon - don’t forget the little things
3) Paper towels - don’t forget these
4) Refrigerator - you can buy these in South Bend
5) Patience and Relaxation - can’t emphasis this enough - you will get mad with ND if you overreact and freak out about waiting - it is very difficult to move in 2,000 students in one day - very difficult - it takes time

Hello everyone,
My dad and I are going to the orientation in August. This is the first time we’ve ever traveled overnight. (My family has just been in the US for 2 years) Could you guys suggest some places my dad could stay for the weekend? Should we fly to South Bend before or right on August 20th? When are the parents supposed to leave? What do I need to bring that I cannot buy at South Bend?
Thanks

Well i am not sure about the availability of a lot of the hotels - your best bet is to google hotels in south bend and call them - as far as whether to fly into south bend, it is probably easiest - there shouldn’t be delays in august - though you never know. you can buy most stuff in south bend - the only obvious things are chargers for phones, computers, printers, clothes and thing like that - parents usually leave sometime on sunday from what i am used to - i flew in on the thursday last year so that i could go shopping before move-in and then get to move in right away but it doesn’t really matter - but you don’t want to get to south bend at like 4:00 PM - that would not be all that great - definitely try to arrive by noon so you can unpack and meet everyone - i suggest thursday night flight into south bend.

I know this is an old thread but I have a similar question. What time should we plan to arrive on campus for a 10:30am move-in time? I assume we must arrive early and “line up” our car and wait. Any recommendations from those with experience?
Thanks.
