Hi guys, okay so I am in 9th grade and have all honors classes + Algebra 2 and Spanish 2. I’m also taking AP Biology this year, (I already studied during the Summer and read loads of books about basic Biology.) and felt like that taking AP Human Geography would be too much for my schedule so I filled it up with a bunch of fun classes like Volleyball and Guitar and Orchestra. This Summer along with studying for AP Biology, I took Leadership Skills Management and HOPE online on FLVS (Florida Virtual.) So tl already, I didn’t opt for AP Human Geography which is probably easy as a lot of people said and regret not taking it with AP Biology since I have a lot of free time this year which I won’t have next year.
Should I take AP Human Geography online along with AP Psychology? (Both are easy and pretty good to follow apparently. Plus I have an interest in both.) When I say this I mean next Summer, the summer of 2016. I heard AP exams are in May usually, and my biggest fear is that I’ll forget everything by that time because during school I’ll be taking 2-4 more APs as a sophomore and I might forget everything before the AP exam … Or do you take the AP exam in the Summer too? I can definitely complete the courses… I was able to do Geometry online… I can definitely do these classes that probably require basic memorization. Just worried that if the AP exam is literally almost a year after I take the APs online, I will most probably forget a lot of things… Really need help, if anyone is familiar with this system, please let me know here. Thanks so much! Very appreciated.
@latiere - have you checked the FLVS schedule to see if that’s even possible? I’m surprised they would offer an AP course over the summer session (and they might, I’m just not sure).
We signed up for an AP course through FLVS, but ended up dropping it to logistical issues. It’s a bit of a coordination pain when you go to actually take the exam. You have to find a high school that will let you take it. Or perhaps your high school (you’re in traditional high school?) would. It’s not as easy as taking SAT/ACT at whatever high school you find online during registration.
If I were you I’d work with your high school guidance counselor and an FLVS counselor to see what they think.
@SouthFloridaMom9 Yeah, I’m sure it’s possible. It’s in the list for Part time courses, plus a close friend of ours took AP Psychology over the Summer himself, so I think it’s pretty possible. I think my high school would let me. I’m just worried that if it’s during May (AP Exam) I’ll probably have forgotten the important key points to the classes and miserably fail. I think I will talk to an FLVS Counselor when I can but for now I’ll ask any other members of College Confidential. Thank you for your help.
Wishing you luck! You could probably find a prep book online closer to the exam in May to refresh what you learned in the course.
Another option is to self study a couple of the APs you’re interested in. It takes considerably less time and you can do it on your schedule. There 100s of threads on here about the best way to go about it.
@LiberalCrafts I actually would like to self-study but I’m a complete beginner to it, I’ll look into some threads explaining how but if you could do it for me that’d be great too Do I just buy study books or something and take the AP exam at my school when it’s time to? And are there recommended books for AP Human Geo? Thanks!
To answer your original question, I don’t recommend it.
Think about it. Taking an AP class over the entire school year (well, September to April) is time consuming enough; imagine cramming the workload into 5-8 weeks. Not ideal.
AP Psych and AP Human Geo are “AP-Lites” (Difficulty ranges from Honors level to just below AP) so it might work for you. Some other suggestions are to take it partially over the summer and finish it during the year (preferably before 1st semester ends) and review/study the material later in the year before the the AP exams (around February-April) so that you won’t forget the information you’ve learnt.
My teachers recommend getting books at the beginning of the year to mark off the topics you have learned and keep on track throughout the year. Use [this thread](Self-Studying APs: Improving Your App - AP Test Preparation - College Confidential Forums) for more helpful information.
Good luck
