So my school's NHS inductions were tonight, but it got me thinking a little bit. I had the required GPA to be invited into it (3.75) but I chose not to apply because of my lack of extracirriculars/leadership/service. I decided to take upon myself this year various different activities/service and I've accumulated 15 hours in the last month. However I am confused as to what cwould constitute "leadership". Is it a concrete elected position or simply an explanation of leadership I've exhibited in my activities?

From what I've been told our chapter is selective enough to where I actually have to have some stuff done. A senior friend of mine told me 30+ hours, several extracirriculars and some leadership should be sufficient. I don't mind doing this... but what can I do to improve my chances of getting in next year? And for one thing, I'm not really doing this to have it on the college app, more so for the personal fulfillment. I like seeing all of my smart friends be inducted into this but somewhat jealous that I'm not.

It’s fairly easy at mine, as well. If you have the qualifications and take the time to complete the application, you will usually be accepted.

You don’t need much ‘formal’ leadership, though a few club positions certainly would not hurt. You just need a volunteer coordinator, a teacher, etc. to vouch for you. They want leaders in the classroom, people who take charge, not just students with random positions arbitrarily tacked on.

Hopefully that’s reassuring. Assuming the amount of leadership positions actually available through school I’d imagine you wouldn’t “need” it to join NHS. A friend of mine had similar application to me and she didn’t get in, which is what I’m somewhat afraid of.

National Honor Society is really easy to get into at my school, too. A few girls who didn’t get in had their parents call the school to complain and basically “cheated their way in”.

I would assume you just need to be somewhat of a decent student at your school. I don’t think colleges will care too much if you don’t have NHS on your app - because so many people are in it, it’s kind of lost it’s prestige.
