NHS Percent

So, I'm looking to found an NHS chapter at my new school.... What percentage should we aim to invite? I only anticipate us having about 60 sophomores. (We are a new school without those above Sophomore status until the coming years.) I would say the median grade is about a 4.0 weighted/3.0 unweighted. (88 on our scale in all honors) Should we aim to invite a lot of people to pay the $100--or be exclusive? I expect that by senior year we'll have about 120 eligible people if we aim at about a 4.0 weighted. Thoughts? About what GPA should we aim toward? I believe I'm the only one with above a 4.7 weighted.... so very close to that won't work.

3.5 NW and 2 CS hours is how my school does it

Our county policy is a 3.5 weighted. At my school that means you have a C+. LOL

wow…C+? that seems a bit patronizing for students that actually earn grades like that…not that it’s not normal or anything

yeah, forget about the money. Running such a big club the first year will be a big challenge. Start off small, it can grow big after you graduate. I say you should make it exclusive and invite your top 25 (rank-wise) kids first. Make it so that it actually is a big deal to be in. At my school, we have to do 12 CS every year, you could bump it up to 15. The thing is though, you will need an officer devoted entirely to CS, cause it is a full-time job. They would have to go and find events for your NHS to do and record all those hours. You could also have group and individual hours, where group hours can only be completed with group projects. That means your sponsors have to be there. This prevents people from waiting till the last minute to get all the hours done at the local community library or some other lame CS.

You should have some kind of recognition ceremony both at the beginning and end of the year. We had tapping and induction at the beginning of the year. Tapping was fun cause we would surprise them, let them know they were accepted, and pull them out of class to go have a picnic at the local park. Show them that only the top dogs get in, and it will be an exclusive club that everyone wants to be in.

This is coming from an NHS President. My school’s chapter is pretty old so we had about 130 kids (Juniors and Seniors) last year. It was definitely hard to manage everyone. We only had one meeting per month and most of the information was relegated through emails every week. It was also kinda hard to motivate people since it was so large. You should also think about the fact that you might not be able to find enough volunteer opportunities to accommodate 60 kids your first year. You need to build connections with different volunteer places in your community first. Don’t be greedy and make this a big club just so you could say you were the prez of your school’s largest club. Trust me, a lot of people are in NHS for college purposes (even though it’s not that big of a deal anyways) and many don’t have the volunteer spirit. Unless you have meaningful service events, the club would not be significant to any college.

oh crap, I didn’t realize you meant you only have 60 kids in your class. In that case, you might only want to invite 10-15 kids

At my school we have to do 40 CS hours and have a 90 average (not a big deal at my school because of our crazy grade inflation, but still), plus a five-hour leadership project and the recommendation of five teachers. If you want it to be exclusive, boost up the hours; slackers won’t want to join. ;)

Ours is 3.0 and higher…and even then there’s only 11 people in the society.

what we have is only juniors and seniors can join, and to actually be inducted in the beginning of junior year they have to accumulate 100 normal service hours and 50 additional leadership hours over their freshman and sophomore years. out of those 100 normal, 40 of them must be from one source (to demonstrate dedication) and you have to have at least 10 inschool and 10 out of school. for the 50 leadership, 20 must be from one source with 5 from inschool and 5 from out of school. in addition to this, you must have a 92 GPA (on 100 scale) minimum to get inducted.

once part of nhs, you have to hand in 6 hours a month (leadership or normal, doesnt matter) and also maintain a gpa above 92.

of course i go to a vocational school where we only have 250 kids in the whole school (140 in juniors+senior classes) and everyone is smart/overachiever/“good student”. so, even out of a class of 70, we still had 29 members in that one grade (seniors). juniors had another like 25ish.

oh and if u miss a month of hours or something ur put on probation and if u miss another then u get kicked out and have to hand in another 150 hours for next year to be reinducted. otherwise, if u maintain it, u only need to ge tthe 6 hours/month over the summer of junior->senior year.

our system might seem a little stringent for a normal high school, so idk. good luck.
