So, my friend lives in a place that is about 30-35 minutes walking distance away from my classes (College of Chemistry buildings). I suppose biking would cut down time for me, but I think I prefer walking for convenience. As for the friend, she's in L&S, meaning her walking time is like 15-20 minutes, maybe. I could stay with her in the future, but here are my concerns.

Would you say it's worth living farther from campus, if the place is nicer and the cost is similar to closer housing? I wonder if I would get tired of the one hour round-trip walk to campus. I am involved in activities that start in the evenings and go until 10-11pm, and also I'd rather be able to be close to my buddies (who are closer to campus)...but this place thirty minutes away is kind of nice and has more space...hm... I wonder if my buddies would be willing to make the trip to visit me often.

is there a bus line that takes you to closer? i’m 15 mins walk from my classes, but luckily the F line takes me right to all my classes in the Hearst Mining circle area.

What you need to ask yourself is if you can tolerate walking to and fro an hour each day (or having to rely on the unreliable bus)? Ask yourself what you’re going to do in between breaks. I used to live 30 minutes from my major’s building and I hated it. I live so much closer to school now that it’s easy to go back for 1 hour breaks or change (if it’s a rainy day). It sounds like you don’t like the idea already. If you have the opportunity to live closer to campus, then take it. You’ll have to commit to the lease you’re going to sign.

Yes, there is a bus, but I’ve heard that it’s not always reliable from several people. I know two EECS roommates who live about 20 minutes walking distance away, and they say sometimes waiting and taking the bus gets them late to class, whereas if they had walked they would’ve made it on time.
I don’t mind the walking (good exercise~). What I do worry about is the hour I’ll lose each day…and it means getting up earlier for class. Ew.

Unless you live where you classes are located at, you will not lose an hour a day to walking. For example, if you lived 10 mins away, then it is a 20 min roundtrip everyday. So if you live 30 mins away, then it is a 60 min roundtrip and you lose 40 mins in the day due to living farther–not 60 mins.

Unless you do something productive every minute of your day, 40 mins lost is no big deal. Plus, you said it will be good exercise so you can use the walk to replace your trips to the RSF (only applicable if you go to the RSF routinely).
