the college i went to last year (uni of IL)
if i went out with friends to a bar or whatnot, for less than $20 you could have a good time.

obviously nyu being set in the city, i'm sure its much more expensive. whats the average amount students spend "out" for some fun. (centered mostly around bar/club life)

Depends where you go. There are many dive bars that you can have a great time in and spend <20$. Always pregame in your dorm before you go out. it'll save you a ton of cash

Attending fraternity or sorority events may reduce costs. They are generally free or require a small cover fee.

Also, most bars will have happy hour or special discounts that can save you a ton of money. Of course, the popular college bar is usually cheaper than the upscale bars downtown.

Hey, it's entirely possible. The college bar has specials on Monday nights where a pitcher of the above average beers (Yeungling, Blue Moon, Coors Lite, etc) are only $5.50. I think two or three pitchers is enough for most nights, especially if you pregame.

Sorry, I forgot you were asking about NYC. My school is in Baltimore, and I assume NYC is more expensive. Still, there are usually some drinks that are very cost effective, if you know what I mean. For us, Irish Carbombs cost almost the same as a bottle of Guiness, and it has around twice the alcohol. The fact you pretty much have to chug it makes it hit harder too.

I'm going to nix the frat and sorority parties, aside from welcome week, they are usually pretty dull - and since they usually rent out bars/lounges - more expensive than normal since you have to pay a higher cover (unless you know someone, but even then you don't know whos going to be at the door/bar tending), plus only ~3% of nyu is in frats/sororities to begin with, so its definitely not a big thing.

As others have pointed out though, your question is rather vague. Depends where you go, and how drunk you want to get. If you pregame it obviously lowers costs. You can find bars with $6-10 pitchers, most decent places cost $12-15 during non-happy hours. During happy hour you can get some ridiculous deal at pourhouse ($1 drafts), bbq (20 ounc pina coloda $4, extra shots $1 each), etc.

If you want to go to night clubs it gets pricey. $10-20 cover fee, $7 bottles of beer, $10-14 for mixed drinks. The more exclusive ones may require you to buy a table (or you might just want to buy one to impress some hot slutty girl), which will run your group $600ish + a few bottles of champagne/wine that cost $100 each.

I'm a border-line alcoholic, and do both the classy life style, and the dirt cheap life style (theres a big schism at nyu between the rich and the poor people, I'm from a poor family but make alot person so I alternate between the two haha), so any specific questions I'd be more apt to help.
