Can anyone offer insights on the Nitze Scholars Program based on your (or your kid's) experience or what you've heard from others? Looking for how it helped you with your school and after school life, pros and cons, or likes and dislikes...etc.

You have to be invited to the program. Their is an interview to be selected and I think about a dozen students are selected. There is some merit money for being in the program. It is more of a global leadership type of program. It seems to have several perks and some travel. I think they select from those with high stats and an interest in global leadership. There is also additional work to be done in addition to the normal requirements but some of the core requirements are met with Nitze classes.

My dd was not invited(I quess stats not high enough) but would not have done it because she had done the IB programme in high school. She just didn’t want to be dictated on what she had to do in addition to what was expected for graduation.

Students can be invited after the first year too.

Have you been notified that your dd is a candidate yet? I would think it would be within the next couple of weeks.

Yes, my son got his invitation over the weekend but not sure if he wants to apply. Looking at what they sent him and the web site, it looks interesting but he is not too crazy about doing another essay, another interview…etc. He is just burned out at this point. His first semester was less than perfect so he wants to refocus on his last semester of high school… I am trying to find out as much info as possible about the program so he can make informed decision. While I want him to give it a shot, if he doesn’t want to, I can surely understand that.

There are so many “follow-up” applications… It’s like we are going thru the college app process twice… Simply crazy.

Congrats on his admission. Nice to know in advance.

It is a good program but it really has to be something he wants to do. Maybe a phone call to find out more information or maybe speak to a current Nitze student. I think they will arrange to have that happen.

@3greatgirls - thanks… but he’s not admitted yet (not officially anyway). We are also not sure if St. Mary’s where he will end up…

Reading your post made me realize that he received a hand written card from one of the Nitze scholar students last week. Basically asking him to apply for the program, how nice the program is and asking him to contact her with qs. I will have him contact the young lady for more info.

It is clear he will be admitted. They don’t officially announce the admission until the end of March but don’t even think he is not going to be admitted. It is just a matter of time before it is official. They let kids that are clearly getting admitted know in advance. You will get invited down for special admit days.

It will be nice to have St Mary’s as a choice even if he decides not to attend.
