NJ Governor School '07

Good question - There are probably plenty of people who have applied to both...is there anyone out there who got into both (in the past) who can tell us how they handled it? I'm guessing most people would choose TASP over gov school.

well, i'm not sure if u can do that because on the gov school application form, you had to sign and vow that we have no other summer programs and that if you get into governor school...u hvta go...but i guess you can make something dramatic up and not go...and also VANGO...i think gov school is only for juniors about to be seniors...

Yes, people do turn down Gov School - somewhere between 0 and 3 students a year, normally. I know this because my friend was on the waitlist a couple of years ago and was finally accepted, (he was last on the waitlist to get in - like, 5th on the list - but that's because some other waitlisters had made alternate plans, I believe).

But yes, morally, if you sign that you will attend unless other strenous circumstances prevent you from doing so, you should probably try your hardest to go.

TASP is ALSO only for Juniors about to be seniors, thus the issue and the concern.

Well, then... does anyone know about the timetables? In other words, when do you know if you've gotten into Governor's School; when do you know if you've gotten into TASP?

yo, just in general, do u all think that gov school is better than TASP? i mean, i read the tasp website and all and i mean, it does seem really cool and prestigious but how does it compare to gov school?...just wondering...

TASP > gov school I would think. Mainly because lots of states have their own gov schools and theres only one TASP...?

Just a guess.

on a general note, which nj gov school do u guys think is the most prestigious or like hardest to get into...i mean...shouldn't they be all the same? for some reason i keep on hearing that some are most difficult to get in than others...

Probably because more people apply to one than to another.

"most prestigious or hardest to get into"

Well, of course it depends on how you measure that, too. The arts is hard to get into, and though they tend to be extremely intelligent people as well, I think their qualifications tend to be more arts-based ... obviously.

[... if that made any sense]

I think it is funny the NJGS thread has more responses than the RSI thread.

the gov school of the arts is ridiculously selective. 18 kids for the visual arts every year from all of nj. and keep in mind that nj has like, what, 300ish schools (or more) and every school can send 1-3 (my school sent two).

yea...i thought so...it seems that a lot more kids applied to the gov school of science and engineering than they did to like public issues...which school do u think is the most competitve to get in? I'm guess like arts and engineering...cuz it seems that allotta top kids want to get in to those...

Does anyone know if every county is equally represented? Or is representation based solely on merit or perhaps population?

I think i read somewhere that the country screening is based on population...like one county can only nominate a certain number of kids due to population...but then in state level its merit....i'm pretty sure that's it...(i can't find da link to it...)

anyone know when we're going to find out from county levels?

i'm not exacetly sure when, but i think sometime this week...before feb.

tunit 2190, i applied this school year ('06-'07) to the School on the Environment. My app was due the 15th and i got my county finalist letter approx. 2 weeks later. it said i will receive my application status on march 5, 2007.

*that is, december 15th 2006

wow...nice...which county do you live in? No one from my school got a county letter yet or heard of anything...and they do notify you even if you don't make it right?

Just adding my two cents.

Given the opportunity again, I would go back to gov school in heartbeat. I think that it was unequivocally the best four weeks of my life. You meet so many intelligent people (just like you!) and develop friendships that last a very, very long time. We NJGSSers have reunions every month, haha.

In response to the "most prestigious or hardest to get into" question, I'd have to agree with lavender in saying that it depends on your definition of "prestige." If you're talking about admission into an Ivy League college, go on facebook and search the groups for "NJGSS" or "NJGSIS" or "NJGSA," etc.

In my opinion, and after talking to my friends who have gone to other gov schools, I think Sciences puts out the most Ivy Leaguers. An unofficial admissions statistic: this year, for early decision, there were about 16 ED acceptances to Princeton, out of 19 that applied from NJGSS.

But really, screw college statistics. NJGSS was the best four weeks of my life.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to drop me a PM. Back to midterm-studying. Damn it.
