My school handed out the guidelines and rules for applying today so I just wanted to start a semi-official gov school thread.

What school are you guys applying for? I'm doing engineering.

wait gov school is still on? i thought they cut the funding so now it's either private funding/parents pay for it (4,000 dollars??)

are all the guidelines online?

i'm most likely applying for the art one if i do apply.

if you want just private message me and i can send you the packet we got..just give me a few minutes to scan it. theres a lot on the art program

its on. the government realized that it was a great program so got it the money together this year. my guidance counselor told us that that they realized they were getting the smartest kids in the state even more against nj so they wanted to keep them here.

They've secured private funding for the 2007 program.

Yay Gov School! I went to the Environment school last year. Feel free to ask questions about applying or about the program itself.

heyy future gov schoolers. i went to NJ Gov School Sciences last year. it was the most amazing four weeks of my life!! feel free to ask me questions too. :)

hey theoneo, do you go to south or north? i think i asked you before but i didn't return back to the thread to read your answer.

Do you have to live in New Jersey to go to gov school?

I live in New York, and I'd really like to do it, but, um, I live in New York.

My grandparents have a summer house in NJ, though. Could that count for anything?

I think you ahve to have permanent residence in NJ and go to an NJ school. It would make the most sense from the government's perspective. Sorry =(

they have gov schools in a lot of states... i don't think there's one in every state, but i do know there's a georgia one, a virginia one, etc. you can't go to the nj gov school if you live in new york...

Aww. That sucks. There is no gov school in New York... =/

do you live in the city? There are a ton of opportunites for students that live in any of the 5 boroughs. I actually wish I could do one of those instead of gov. school.

Really? Like what? I haven't really been able to find anything. Yeah, I live in Manhattan.

Do you know of any opportunities here? That would be really helpful. Thanks!

I already sort of have a list potential programs, but I'm always looking.... lol
Thanks.

I know that there are some at the museums. Natural history has some in the science section and MOMA has a few working with management. The parks and recreation department and community planning have programs and so does cooper union. Ill find the urls and post them.

Thanks so much!

this one has a lot of different links: http://hist.stuy.edu/internship.htm

http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/hr/intern.htm

Ooh... thanks! I'll definitely check these out! :)

I'm looking at the links you gave me, and ISERP (@ Columbia) looks like it could be potentially interesting, but I don't really get what you do, exactly. Could you explain that to me, please?
Thanks.

From what I can tell it is just an internship helping out the professors that are doing research. It's probably just like a science internship, you help them out with the mediocore aspects of their research but you get your name in the authors section of the final paper.

Yeah, but do you know what kind of research? Like, what field? Psychology? Social Sciences? History? etc. Thanks!

I think its in economics and social policy? lol. I only know what the website says. They do say that the amount of interns they take depends on the professors who need interns, so the actual subject of research is probably different for each person.
