NJ Scholars 2012

I havent heard yet, im still at school, my dad is gonna send me a pic of the letter… i cant believe you didnt get in! from what you were saying it sounded like your interview went really well… hopefully ill know soon

i got in!!! i cant believe it, it’s going to be an amazing summer

there is a facebook group, if you havent been added to it yet search NJ Scholars 2012, its an open group

Hi! I’m going to be a Scholar at this year’s program! Is there a facebook group yet, so we can get in contact before the summer?

search nj scholars 2012 on facebook and ask to join!!

i’m applying for the NJ Scholars program 2013. any advice on the essays?

Hi aboo1234 im applying as well. did your guidance counselor give you any background or extra information on how to write the first three essays?

no:((((((. i’m at a total loss. im trying to ask my history teacher for help! the world limit is really posing a problem.

im having trouble choosing a writing sample for the application; do any previous Scholars know if the readers are looking for a more formal or creative sample?

wait there is a word limit?!?! my guidance counselor never said there was any? And writing sample? As in style or approach? because on the first essay i mostly just focused on academics importance and how it is important to and affects me

Folks, I am uniquely well-informed on this topic. I help judge the essays and participate in the interview process.

Formal or creative doesn’t matter that much, as long as the sample shows how well you use communicate in written English. I daresay that something reflecting your personality would help, but over several essays, I think that is likely to come out.

The form says “approximately 300 words (or one page)”. I’d say if you keep it to a page, no one is likely to make a fuss. I know I wont.

Thank you!

Do you know if the NJSP selection committee chooses candidates based more on GPA, PSAT’s, # of A.P courses, and extracurricular activities, or more on whether the candidate demonstrates interest, passion, and intellectual curiosity through his/her essays?

bookmarking.

I’d say more the latter. Since schools are limited in the number of nominees, the caliber of people applying is pretty high. I look at grades, but I can’t remember having ever made a decision, one way or the other, based upon them.

One of our goals to to put together an interesting class-one that is accomplished, yet at the same time one that is diverse and capable of exploring all sides of an issue. We look towards written communication skills for indicators there.

Is humor something you appreciate/look for in an applicant?

It certainly can’t hurt.

thanks so much. my guidance counselor never gave us the sheet of paper explaining the essays, or the word limit. fortunately she didnt mail the applications out when my friend and i went to her about it.
