I never thought I would get my voter registration confirmation before the National Merit finalist letter, whether yes or no.

And they say the board of elections is slow....

Our name ends in "A" and still no letter yet (Alabama). D found out she is a Finalist from her school today.

Just talked w a mom whose daughter was told at school by counselor that she is a finalist. But they have not gotten a letter at home yet. She also heard that the mailout date was the 9th. My S goes to a different h.s. and he has not heard anything yet.

My daughter got her letter Friday, 2/11. Last name starts with N; in Illinois. Nothing from school.

No news from school or mail...live in SoCal

I got my letter today (MN)

received today (TX)

I'm a finalist but I haven't gotten a letter yet. Neither have the 7 other Finalists in my school.

My son got the letter yesterday, but the letter is hard to understand.

Only one school where he has applied offers a NM scholarship. However, this school is not at the top of his wish list. Should he list "undecided" on his school choice?

What if he gets accepted to that school and gets offered a NM scholarship through the school? Is he ineligible for the general scholarship if he doesn't go to that school? Should he change his school choice now or wait?

He should keep it undecided.

Keep in mind that the deadline to change isn't until April, by then he should have heard from other schools and will see if that school is still not his first choice.

Heard from my principal this week and finally got the letter today, in NY, and my name's way at the end of the alphabet. I'm in the same boat as AnotherMom's son, though, since none of my top-choice schools offer nms scholarships and so few general ones are given out. Fingers crossed for the $2500 though ;-).

What should you put for your first choice school if you know where you are going, but that school doesn't offer any NM scholarship?

I JUST got my letter here in NY, finally, still haven't heard from school though.

Just put undecided if you KNOW 100% that you're going to a school that doesn't offer a NM scholarship, you're still eligible for the $2500 and the corporate-sponsored scholarships.

Lucky for me, my school does offer a National Merit scholarship, unfortunately it's only about $750....

S got his letter today (Louisiana).
Confusing letter, I agree.......the deadlines in particular. I cannot quite decide if April 20 is the deadline for undecided students to inform NM of their choice. Anyone???

My school got my certificate for me qualifying about a week before my letter arrived at my house... but the letters should be in the mail, so you should get them soon...

Today -- suburbs in Texas

I got mine today in central Florida.

My son received the letter today. (2/12).

His college choice is list as undecided - and he still truly is. Noted something interesting. Three of the four schools he applied to are not NM schools. One is. But, it looks like the one-time scholarship that this school gives to NM Finalists is actually less than the than one-time scholaship that comes directly from NMSC.... Hmmm.....

randomdad - you can't count on the one time scholarship that comes from NMSC, even if you are not getting one from anywhere else. They have a limited number of them, apportioned by state.

D received her letter yesterday (NY). Apparently the school was notified last week, but for some reason didn't tell the students. Don't know why they made the kids wait, but then I don't understand the whole NMS program all that well. Have you ever tried to explain it to someone? It's interesting to note the exact moment the eyes start to glaze over.
