I’m sure many people at Bama are trying to catch up with all their emails and such after being off last week.

Dr. Sharpe is especially busy since he wears two hats…not only is he the dean of the Honors College, but he’s also the director of CBH. Both are full-time jobs. I don’t know how long he can go on doing both jobs.

I asked my son about the Adobe software. If you are referring to the Adobe Creative Suite CS3 or CS4, the NMF laptop did NOT come with it. The laptop works of a Microsoft platform.
I use CS4 on a Mac for graphic arts work. I also know that Adobe CS3/CS4 are available for Mac and PC platforms. If your software is PC compatible, you may be able to download it to the gifted laptop.

this is the reply i got, which Dr Sharpe forwarded to me from Carolyn Rogers:

We will mail eligible students notification of the date and time to arrive for laptop distribution the day prior to the beginning of classes.

Not all NMF are eligible to receive the laptop, as they have to name UA as their #1 college choice and register for an orientation session by specific dates to meet the requirements. Let me know if this does not answer your question.

We are required to put the computers out via bid through our technology dept. Over the past several years, the bid has been awarded to Dell, and is a top of the line computer.

^^^I’m betting then that it is a bidding process based on price and specs. If that is the case, it would be hard for Apple to win IMHO. I’d be expecting a Dell or possibly an HP laptop if I were NMF. Note the reminder to pay attention to the deadline for Bama Bound registration you must abide by if you want the laptop.

Right now, I can’t find the written details, but I think you have to sign up for Bama Bound by June 1st. Does that sound right? (You don’t have to “attend” Bama Bound by June 1st, but you have to have signed up by June 1st).

SEA_Tide is right about the negotiation of prices. When DS1 got his, he got a letter announcing how happy Bama was to have been able to negotiate laptops that were worth a lot more than what Bama had to pay for them (I think they paid about $2k each, but they were worth a lot more, and they included 3 years of at-home warranty repair. The Dell people come right to a dorm if a repair/replacement is needed.)

Bama has to order about 150+ for NMF, NH, NA, Fellows, Crimsons, and probably some for various others who need them. While that’s not a huge order…it must be enough to warrant a good negotiation

I’m also wondering what software will be on the NMF laptops. I saw where someone said the Office Suite is included but not Adobe. I’ll be in the Engineering college, which may require additional specialized software. Does anybody know if I could get any of that software installed?

My son is a Mathematics/CBH major. He said that the laptop is suitable. He uses the large department computer lab when working on specific projects. This may be the case with your major as well.
