NMF Laptops

Does anyone know what type of laptops NMF receive? I’ve heard some sort of Dell business laptop, but I’ve also heard that if you talk to UA, you can get a Mac. Any thoughts?

My son has a Dell Latitude E6500. Crimson in color. Very sweet unit. He picked it up a day before classes started.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Macs are also available by request.

My son was given a business Dell Latitude, which is very nice. But, the CBH lab has some new Macs, so maybe those could be requested, too.

Send a note to Dr. Sharpe and ask. I imagine that the request would have to happen soon if the option is available.

However, since all the laptops are given out at the same time, I don’t know if Bama would want the awkwardness of giving some kids one type and some kids another type - when many kids wouldn’t have known that a choice was available.

If Bama is considering letting kids get Macs, then they should let that option be known to all ahead of time.

UA is both PC and Mac friendly. I don’t think that NMF’s will have the option to get a Mac this year because it has not been announced. FYI, since this past year’s NMF laptops are red, it’s really easy to spot NMF students.

^^^

True…it’s also easy to spot them by their backpacks…black with a white A embroidered on them.

so NMF get backpacks too?

I assume the NMF kids bring their own printers, then, if the laptop is provided. Does anyone know if you can get a UA discount to purchase a printer (i.e. through Dell, etc.)?

Yes, the National scholarship kids get backpacks.

Yes, kids bring their own printers. However, many kids don’t bother and use the school’s printers…I think it’s 5 cents a copy. CBH copies are free.

Also, a lot of homework is submitted electronically, so often no printing is required.

What type of pack? I was planning on buying a new northface, but if they provide one, I might not

Can y’all enlighten me on what software is installed on the laptops? Just thinking things through and wondering if we’ll have to upgrade any software when she’s on campus.

My son’s came with a variety…Microsoft Office, etc…

What specifically were you wondering about?

For the few things that need to be printed, one of the cheap printers from Wal-Mart seem to be the choice of many people.

M2CK: I was wondering about any Adobe Suites. I know the student software prices are ridiculously cheap (I bought an Adobe suite when I was graduating with my Masters because the student price was $299 but the retail was $1500) but I’m trying to budget for what’s coming up for the fall. I think that all she’d need for now is a Microsoft Office suite.

We’re big Canon printer fans; one of their benefits is that the color print cartridges are bought separately from each other. Other brands seem cheaper but you spend a lot more on the print cartridges over time.

I don’t know if the Adobe suite is on it. My son is on his way back to Bama, so I’ll ask him later.

I sent Dr. Sharpe an email a few days ago, but sadly he has yet to respond :(

^It’s spring break.

i think their spring break was last week.

I sent it on Sunday so he would find it Monday morning. Spring break was last week.

Oh. My bad. Give him a day or two. If he doesn’t reply this week, call or email again next week.

While you would like any questions concerning laptops answered quickly, Dr. Sharpe also might be very busy meeting with students who are currently registering for the fall semester (My son registered Tuesday) or planning for the upcoming Honors Week. You might also consider dropping Jane Batson a note concerning the NMF laptops.
