NMF rejection letters go out very soon!

*With regards to my appeal, should I send NMC my first semester grades? Or might they just get tossed out? Should I have my counselor send them with his letter of appeal? *

Yes…and do it ASAP!

Well, I got my rejection letter a few days ago and I’m very disappointed.

My first two years of high school were pretty rough and I got a few Cs in terms of semester grades. However, I got straight As junior year, a 2170 SAT score (first try), volunteer of the year at my library and 5s on all 4 AP tests taken junior year. Additionally, I got a glowing letter of recommendation from one of the smartest teachers at my school and wrote what I thought was a pretty good essay.
Should I appeal? My grades this year have been straight As with 4 AP classes and a weighted GPA of 4.8.

Sorry if it sounds like I am needlessly tooting my own horn. I usually am modest, but I’m just a bit let down that I got knocked off because of Cs, when I thought that holistically my application was pretty good, and my junior grades plus recs/essays/test scores should have proven that my early grades were flukes or outliers in my record.

What is your unweighted GPA from your freshman year to junior year?

Your weighted GPA of 4.8, is it the GPA of your junior year?

Monster, Did your rejection letter come this week?

OK … if your S or D has good unweighted GPA from freshman to junior year, no discipline problem in high school, good recommendation from school, meet the SAT cut off score … then you should not worry about the rejection letter.

*Should I appeal? *

Yes, have your GC quickly send a letter of support and send a copy of your latest transcript. Your GC may need to fax the info for quickness.

@gongho The 4.8 is my weighted GPA of my Semester 1 senior year grades. I’m not sure what my junior year’s was. I had straight As but less AP classes, so I only know that my UW was a 4.
@minoafrau My rejection letter came around the 22nd. I live in Florida so I’m guessing that’s why there was such a delay. It just said that I was rejected because of my academic record. Since I have no disciplinary issues I guess that just means my grades.
@mom2collegekids Thanks for the advice! I will talk to my GC on Monday and have her send my latest transcript via fax.

What is the address my counselor should send the letter to? I gave him the address on the letter, but is there someone/some department specific it should be address to?

^^^

I think the info should be faxed to save time.

When do you think the appeal is due? I am still getting records of my extenuating circumstances… Do you think next Tuesday will be too late? If I overnight it?

I actually wanted my counselor to fax a copy of my grades to another school (new GPA allows me to apply for a scholarship), and apparently our school has a policy of not faxing things.

MA2011, I sure hope next week isn’t too late… We only took our finals last week, and my counselor said he couldn’t do it before next week. =|

Yes but if you take a look at last year’s posts it looks as if Finalist notifications go out the first week of Feb., so I am a little concerned! I think I will just forget about the documents I was going to send and just send a counselor and principle rec, as well as my own letter of appeal and an updated transcript. If someone could post the fax number I would be much obliged  Suddenly I am very anxious about deadline even if it doesn’t really exist lol

MA2011- The sooner the better. Finalist letters are announced on Monday.

NMSC fax # (847) - 866-5113

Good luck!

So is the appeal process officially over once the finalists are announced?

Don’t know…that’s why you need to get your paperwork in monday.

Bleh, well I’m afraid that’s not going to happen. I e-mailed my counselor on Thursday asking if he could write the letter any sooner, and he said the earliest he could do it was next week. I guess I’ll just hope for the best…

My guidance counselor spoke with National Merit today. They said they need a letter of justification of appeal and any grades that they do not have thus far (This means Semester 1 grades for many).
They also said the process is ongoing throughout the Spring, so there is no recent deadline. They said to get the papers in in the next few weeks, via mail or fax.

Oh, that’s wonderful. Thank you very much. I think my counselor sent my letter today, so at least I won’t be automatically rejected.

Finalist letters are announced on Monday? Does that mean the schools were notified yesterday?
