For those who are NMF, did you receive a letter yet documenting that USC is giving you the half merit scholarship?

No, my s has not recvd anything from USC yet. He is a NMF. Have you recvd anything from USC yet? I was also wondering myself about this.

Yes, D has. She applied before Dec 10.

columbia,

When did your d get her letter? We also applied prior to Dec. 10th. Did she interview for any other scholarships at USC?

She received the letter immediately after she was notified she was NMF. So maybe 10 days after her acceptance package arrived(1/31). D is lucky she did not have to interview for any scholarship so far. Actually she did not bother to apply to UCLA/UCB Alumni(it was not worth it). USC Scholarship is much more substantial with no application.

EDIT: Her friend also received some small scholarship(1/8 tuition off, maybe Dean's ? ) with no interview either. Her mom is a legacy though.

Oh, thanks. My son is a NMF but has not received anything from USC yet in terms of advising him of the 1/2 tuition.

My son is a NMF, received his acceptance letter to USC, but did not receive a letter saying that USC is giving him the half tuition scholarship associated with the NMF. I am wondering if this documentation comes later or if I should call.

My son did not designate USC as his choice with the NMF group until after he attended the Explore session and decided to go to USC in mid April. He then told NMF USC was his first choice. It was May before we got the financial aid package with the 1/2 tuition scholarship.

His initial package with USC did not reflect it.

Also remember there is an additional $1,000 a year scholarship in addition to the 1/2 scholarship presidential fund that gets added later.

Add more information that might or might not help. DD designated USC as first choice when she was commended last Feb. Then when she turned in her NMF application, her counselor said to put undecided. As it stands she is undecided but somehow USC financial office did send her a letter.

Does anyone know 100% for sure that the NMF half tuition merit scholarship money at USC is for 4 years or just for 1 year?

USC Merit Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence,
leadership, service, talent and other criteria specific to the
individual program. Students admitted to the Resident Honors
Program are guaranteed a Deans Scholarship, however they are
eligible to receive a Presidential or Trustees Scholarship. Meeting
the stated requirements does not guarantee that youll receive a
particular scholarship; our scholarship recipients often exceed the
minimum criteria. Recipients must enroll full-time (16 units each
semester) and maintain a cumulative GPA at USC of 3.0 or higher.
USC administers scholarship programs, ranging from $500 stipends
to full tuition waivers. Most of these programs have specific
application requirements and selection criteria. The chart on
pages 1213 summarizes the various programs available. Unless
otherwise noted, scholarships are open to all students. Most
awards are renewable for up to three additional years.

Page 13-14.

Although I can't find where it says continue for 4 years but I think most of these types of scholarships are if you meet the minimum GPA.

My son's acceptance letter did not mention anything about being admitted to the Resident Honors Program. Is this for early admission (i.e. high schoolers who leave high school early) or is it also for NMF who will graduate 4 years of high school?

^Sorry, I was not being clear. Page 13-14 explains all different types of scholarships. It's the only place that I found googling USC website. Not RHP program. RHP is for Junior I think.

i'm a NMF and i put USC as my first choice. i still haven't heard anything from USC yet. i'm getting a bit anxious! :(

@quixoticpursuit: Don't be anxious...
I called their FinAid Office about NMF and putting USC as first choice. He said NMF is handled by the Admissions Office and transfered my call to Admissions. The guy who answered said "Yes, NMF students who put USC as first choice are guaranteed half tuition"
I have heard rumors that it's half tuition + $1000/year, but the guy who took my call said half tuition for sure.

^yes the letter to my daughter has the +$1000 amount if you don't have a corporate sponsor.

yahh. for NMF, I put USC as my first choice cuz it offered the most..

I'm pretty sure it's every year as long as u keep up the GPA (which I heard isn't very difficult at USC). On the letter frm NMS, they said that they'll "begin notification" for first college choices starting from March 1st. I haven't gotten anything from USC yet.. not even an acceptance letter/package. :[

Anyway, on the USC letter saying that I would no longer be considered for merit scholarships, they said

I am sorry to say that you were not selected for further consider for either of these two scholarships [Trustee and Presidential Scholarships]. Although you might be disappointed, please remember you are still being considered for other scholarships. In addition, if you are admitted, named a National Merit Finalist and chose USC as your first-choice institute, you will receive a USC Presidential scholarship.

So obviously, the presidential scholarships = NMF one. Therefore, it's for four years.

ANXIOUS to hear my decision. >_< I hope NMS can help me a tad bit on this one. THat would be awesome.

So, is the NMF pres scholarship put towards the family contribution portion, or the university grant fin aid portion? That might be a stupid question, but I know that at Stanford, all scholarships go towards the university grant.

Anyway, I'd just like a definite answer to this question.

That is a great question!! I also heard that at some colleges any scholarship $ that a student earns goes towards to colleges side.

My S was at Explore. The Fin Aid person said that you are guaranteed the half tuition if you are NMF and name USC as first choice. He also said if you receive a half scholarship, you won't receive any fin aid other than loans. The scholarship $ goes to the college side and the parent contribution will be the remaining amount of cost of going to USC.
