USC National Merit Finalist Scholarship Notification

Sorry I know there's a lot of these threads already existing, but I couldn't find a clear answer to my question so I thought I might as well try asking directly on here.

I'm a national merit finalist with USC designated as my first choice and I was just accepted last weekend. Does anyone know when USC will notify national merit finalists who were just accepted about the NMF presidential scholarship? All I can find on the official USC site is "by April 1, 2014." It's not April 1 yet so maybe I'll find out tomorrow, but it's getting pretty close...

So basically have any other NMFs heard about the scholarship from USC yet? Particularly those who weren't admitted until last week (cuz I heard the trustees/whatever you call the people who got accepted in late January already got their scholarship stuff). Thanks for your time!

I am also an NMF in your situation. My FA package actually just uploaded and there is no trace of the half-tuition scholarship, but after combing through the pinned USC Financial Aid thread, it appears that the NMF scholarship may not officially appear in the package for a week or two and that we shouldn’t panic (although it’s hard not to, looking at these numbers!).

agitations is correct. In the meantime, upload your NMS letter and email admissions to inquire - no need to sit and worry

@alamemom Thank you! Quick question…looking at my package right now, if the half-tuition scholarshp was added to my gift aid, and that number subtracted from the COA, my net cost would be less than 6k, extremely doable for my situation. In your experience, will the scholarship cause the amount of grant money from the university to be reduced?

A USC Presidential scholarship is a resource in financial aid, so no, it won’t work quite the way you hope. Read page 1 of this thread <a href=“FAQ for USC Financial Aid - University of Southern California - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/839970-faq-for-usc-financial-aid-p1.html</a> for LOTS of FA info. In the first post you will find the following:

That’s very disappointing…if this turns out to be the case, I guess USC will be a “financial rejection” for me. Thanks for all of your help.

As stated in other threads NMScholars will received a $1000 per year scholarship from the NMScholarship Foundation. Please follow the advice from alamemom in previous threads. There MAY also be smaller scholarships from the individual schools such as Viterbi, Annenberg and Marshall. Make sure your financial package is complete before making a final decision. Read alamemom’s threads which will help guide you through the financial aid process.

Same problem here. No NMF nor Calgrant. What is the email for Finaid?
I think my son uploaded NMF letter to Admission docs. Should he also upload to finaid docs? Also upload California Aid report?

Financial aid is typically posted by about the 7th or 8th of April. An email will be sent alerting you when your package is ready to be viewed.

If you have not already done so, upload a copy of your NMS letter and submit that. You can do so on USConnect. If you wish to email, the contact info is here http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/contact.html</a> . Again, financial aid for all students is not typically complete by now, so there is no need to be concerned. If you have not been alerted that your package is ready by next Tuesday sending and email would make sense.

The California aid report is not required. The Cal Grant is administered by CSAC, not USC, so log into your WebGrants for students account <a href=“CSAC - Student Landing Home”>CSAC - Student Landing Home; to be sure you have been awarded a Cal Grant. Don’t worry if USC does not show as your school - CSAC simply lists whichever California school appeared first on your FAFSA. You can submit a school change on WebGrants after you choose which school you will attend.

Cross Posted with the National Merit thread;

My son got the $2500 award from NMSC

He is also hoping to get the automatic half tuition award from USC.

I am not sure he should accept or decline the $2500 award in order to get the much larger award from USC.

I am afraid if he accepts the $2500, he cannot get the USC half tuition.
I am also afraid if he declines the $2500, he could also not get the USC half tuition.

What is the correct thing to do? help!

Finally, can he get both? USC half tuition plus the one time $2500 from NMSC?

Congrats to your S! That’s awesome! Our S wasn’t offered that but did get the USC 1/2 NMF presidential award plus $1000 per year as a NMF attending USC from USC. He also got a smaller $2500/year from Viterbi for being in engineering (back in 2006). All the awards were renewable. I would double check with USC FAid about it, but my understanding is if they accept the $2500 NMF award, whey can’t also accept the $1000 per year USC NMF award but CAN get the 1/2 tuition USC NMF Presidential award.

If he accepts the $2,500 award, yes he will still get the USC 1/2 tuition Presidential because that is a USC scholarship not a NMC award.

HOWEVER - NMF at USC receive an “extra” $1,000/year from NMC, which totals $4,000, so it is more advantageous than the $2,500 one-time award. Posters in the past have found that if they accept the $2,500 award, they no longer are eligible for the $1,000/year award.

Questions to ask USC: I am NMS, I am accepted, I have named USC as first choice - can you verify that I will receive the NMS Presidential 1/2 tuition award? Can you advise me on accepting the $2,500 one-time award? Is there a way to instead receive the $1,000/year award?

Question to ask of NMC - can you decline the $2,500 award to become eligible for the $1,000 at USC?

If you get a definitive answer on the $2,500 one-time award vs the $1,000 per year award, post to let us know!

P.S. CONGRATS on the $2,500 one-time award!

@alamemom, thanks for your answer. Or pointing me to the answer.
Seems like there has been a lot of debate over the years about this, and it seems that in the past people who got the $2500, missed out on the $1000/year.

Seems to me that the bigger risk is to decline it.
Also, my son is not 100% settled on USC, and the $2500 needs to be declined/accepted by April 9. He will not be decided by then.

He is 40% UCLA, 40% USC and 20% UCSD

and since $2500(will get no matter where he goes if accepts, and changes school in time)
is greater than
40% of $4000(would get if declines $2500 and goes to USC)

Then mathematically I think I have convinced myself of advising him to accept the $2500
By the way, the % numbers above are a guess, but the conclusion is still correct.

All this and it does not even take into account the time-value-of-money, discounting of future cash flows. :-)

By the way I called, and they confirmed my son will get the 1/2 tuition scholarship.
Letters will go out Friday by Postal mail to the recipients.
Will be visible by Monday on usc connect.

^ GREATEST post EVER! Your conclusion makes perfect sense!

Great news about the NMS Presidential! Thanks for getting the info straight from the source.

I just called and USC person strongly encouraged me to accept NMSC $2500.

@rgosula If your son has been offered the $2500, he is not and will not be eligible for the $1000 /yr NMSC college-sponsored scholarship so it makes no sense to reject the $2500. According to the NMSC instructions, a student will only be OFFERED one award. Once the offer is mailed by NMSC, the student is ineligible for any other NMSC award. @alamemom is correct about the half-tuition part being a USC award and not governed by the NMSC rules.

accepted $2500, thanks all for the feedback

Scholarship letter uploaded to Admission check!

Any progress on the decision  ?
