NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

The UMass one is not official (they’re not in the NMSC book listing school-based awards) but becoming a scholar by getting that scholarship would be circular. I think it must just be an error. I’ll call them when I get a chance, and report back what I learn. I’m also hoping to get an idea how competitive it is, and what is considered beyond NMF status.

mathmomvt

Please let us know what you find out about UMASS’s competitive scholarships. UMASS is on my son’s list for next year.
Also regarding “the NMSC book listing school-based awards” that you referred to, do students who make it as National Scholarship Semifinalists receive one of these or should I search Amazon?
Thanks

vryproudmom, I haven’t had a chance to call yet but I will definitely report back here. As to the booklet, I think they give them to kids when they sign up for the PSAT, but it is also available on their website in PDF form: http://www.nationalmerit.org/student_guide.pdf</a></p>

Is the list on the first post still current? I visited University of Tulsa a few weeks ago, and the admissions counselor told me the NMF scholarship is not an automatic full ride. About 40 NMFs will get full rides, and many will get full tuition or another partial scholarship, but she said that last year around 150 NMF applied for the scholarship and they didn’t all get scholarships.

The first post is three years old, so certainly things have changed.

Zeb,

Look back at Post #486 to see the latest list. You will notice it had Tulsa listed as “full ride competitive”. The updated list is really a great asset, thanks to those who keep it up to date!

Auburn has tightened its conditions for awarding its NMF and NMSF scholarships:

Quote:
National Merit and Achievement Finalists must have a minimum 3.5 high school GPA and meet the February 1 application for admission deadline.
National Scholars Presidential Scholarships are limited and awarded competitively for non-residents.

For semifinalists, the scholarship is limited to in-state students who have a minimum 3.5 high school GPA.

We probably need to update the list on Post 486 since each year, some schools change/tweak/elimanate scholarships for future NMF applicants.

Southern Methodist changed to “up to $5000, can be combined with other awards not to exceed full tuition and fees” as dramadad posted in December.

The University of Dallas now limits the number of full tuition scholarships for National Merit Finalists to 20 per incoming class.

George Washington University - $15,000 per year to National Merit Finalists, National Achievement Finalists, and National Hispanic Scholars.

Texas Tech no longer participates.

Keep in mind that scholarships get applied to need, not “family contribution”.

So if a school costs 55k

and you have a family contribution of $20k

and you have $25k in “need”

and the school awards a 15k scholarship

then that goes towards “need”…it doesn’t go towards the $20k that YOU have to pay.

Just want to add the University of Alabama at Birmingham award(s) -

NMF / NA / NHS - •Full tuition, required fees, and housing (up to 15 credit hours per semester) for a total of eight semesters (fall and spring)
•A one-time $2,500 stipend to be used for experiential learning (Study Away, internships, co-ops, etc.)

Also several honors programs more specialized for your interests, some of which add additional scholarships (stackable).

Someone please tell me how to do the quote thing in blue… About what is below…I thought National merit scholarships were not based on need. We will have no need at all. Wouldn’t we just get the scholarship?

Keep in mind that scholarships get applied to need, not “family contribution”.

So if a school costs 55k

and you have a family contribution of $20k

and you have $25k in “need”

and the school awards a 15k scholarship

then that goes towards “need”…it doesn’t go towards the $20k that YOU have to pay

crazymomster, do you have a link?

“all scholarships” at this link: <a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found;

NMF/NHS/NA scholarship at this link: <a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found;

Let me know if you want more information on the honors programs.

UA-Birmingham has the only bio-medical engineering program in the state. (maybe the only one accredited? I don’t remember the exact “only”, but something close to that.)

@ choirfarm

Yes, if you have no need, you will only get the scholarship.

But for us, for example, a full tuition scholarship would be less than our need, so for us, a full tuition scholarship is useless (except perhaps at state schools that provide little to no financial aid).

So if I’m going to have 10k out of pocket either way, I wouldn’t choose a NMF school (more than likely).

S just received a NMF offer in the mail from UTD.

Full tuition and mandatory fees

$8000 cash yearly (presumably to pay for room and board, which is currently guestimated at $8300 for on campus)

$2000 for study abroad (awardable after 2 academic years in residence)

^ thanks crazymomster.

Hello, I’m a high school senior who just received an Oklahoma National Scholars Program scholarship. I’m expected to reply with Yes/No/Maybe soon, before I have a chance to hear from other schools to which I had applied. I would like to reply with a “Maybe”.

However, for a “Maybe” they’d like an accompanying explanation. Does anyone have any suggestion how to best “explain” my situation since I would like to wait to hear from most of not all of the schools before making a final decision? At the same time, don’t want to alienate the school which has already awarded me a scholarship.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
