Something seems off about that. Is it a scholarship for national merit? If so, most Oklahoma schools don’t need to know your decision till April. The only exception I know of is University of Tulsa, who wants you to name them first choice right away. If you don’t they might withhold their scholarship.

Some national merit scholarships do require the student to name the school their first choice earlier than the end of April. Boston University requires March 1, I believe. But the above poster doesn’t sound like a NM thing.

Choirfarm quote:

“I thought National merit scholarships were not based on need. We will have no need at all. Wouldn’t we just get the scholarship?”

Keep in mind that scholarships get applied to need, not “family contribution”.

So if a school costs 55k

and you have a family contribution of $20k

and you have $25k in “need”

and the school awards a 15k scholarship

then that goes towards “need”…it doesn’t go towards the $20k that YOU have to pay

================

Choirfarm…my post doesn’t really apply to you. You’ll get whatever merit your child qualifies for.

My post was about those with need. Some think that the student will get need based aid for their “need”…and also get merit which they then can use for their EFC. My point was that any merit gets applied to “need” first…if it covers all need and then cuts into EFC fine (or if you have no need), only then is EFC reduced.

In your case, if cost is $50k and your EFC is $50k, then any merit will reduce what you pay.

I’m not sure if it’s National Merit scholarship. It is specifically: Oklahoma academic scholars institutional nominee, apparently sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. It seems that many of the major OK schools offer this.

[Academic Scholars](<a href=“OKcollegestart - Page Not Found”>OKcollegestart - Page Not Found)

I think I’m farily certain of its legitimacy, just wondering how to properly respond.

Thanks!

If the school offered you a merit scholarship, it should mean they would really like you to enroll at their school. And if they said an acceptable answer was “maybe”, then you should be OK. I think if you are honest and say you were are very interested in that school, but you are waiting to hear back from other schools where you applied regarding acceptance and potential financial aid, then I think there should be no harm done. I would add that as soon as you make a decision you will notify them immediately.

I would caution you to be sure and look into anything on the school’s website or on what they sent you regarding their scholarship regarding deadlines, so that you do not wait too long to hear back and miss any required deadlines.

I heard that Carnegie Mellon also gives money for NMF. Is this true? (Applied there as a supposed match school, not sure if I’d go there since they’re costly as anything)

I’m not aware of a NMF scholarship program at Carnegie Mellon.

CrazyMomster: So the UTD offer is essentially a full-ride. Have you visited? Any comments on the school? My S (junior with 222 PSAT in GA, so cautiously optimistic about NM) is interested in engineering, and we’re visiting Alabama next week. However, UTD also has a good engineering program and, if there are NMSF full-rides available, UTD has the additional advantage that S could potentially play baseball there. Thx.

^ PM sbjdorlo (that might not be quite right, but you’ll see her posts around). Her S was just on campus and visited. I have not been on campus, but spent much of my younger years in Dallas and love the city. My S really liked UTD and only took it off the list because he had so many other schools to apply to and for a full ride school he preferred UA - Birmingham (neuroscience and bioengineering and immediate research).

What kind of engineering is your S interested in?

Yes, the UTD offer is essentially a free ride (even more than Alabama as UA doesn’t cover food, but the UTD offer covers room and board with the $8000 yearly cash, with the exception of about $300).

Also talk to sbjdorlo about the baseball, she may have some answers for you on that too.

Also Pitt (a strong engineering school) “freely” offers full tuition scholarships for high stat early applicants (like apply in September). They also have a competitive full ride, but currently the SAT scores would need to be 1550 for M/CR to be eligible for nomination. They also offer engineering scholarships, on top of the tuition.

Thanks CMster. He does not know about kind of engineering, just looking for best direction for his math/sci interests.

I updated much of this list out of curiosity. Please suggest corrections or additions, as I omitted several colleges from the last list and some colleges did not readily offer current information.

Although I think you may have got a lot of them, it looks to me like you may have missed several. For example, at a quick glance, I did not see Miss State and SMU. Also The OU and OKla St. dollar values are for out of state, not instate, and will change each year as tuition changes. I think the previous description from Post 547 was more accurate for them. Also all National Merit Finalist Awards require the student to name the school as first choice, so you could leave that statement out.

Also not sure why you dropped the original list division of those schools that provide essentially a full ride from those that give smaller, but still decent awards. that seemed like a pretty useful division to me.

It does seem to be a moving target, so I think the effort is needed.

Hi,

Thanks for all the effort. Doing that is a big deal!

I would change the Alabama one to mention the NMF offer first, then mention what someone who only makes NMSF gets. I’ve had several people misread and only see the first part and think NMFs only get free tuition.

oops UAB (University of Alabama Birmingham) is not on there… They also have full tuition/housing etc for national acheivement and national hispanic scholars

UAB is a destination for academically talented students, and we love to reward your hard work. We recognize National Merit Finalists, National Achievement Finalists, and National Hispanic Scholars with the following scholarship, which is renewable for four years. The details:

Full tuition, required fees, and housing (up to 15 credit hours per semester) for a total of eight semesters (fall and spring)
A one-time $2,500 stipend to be used for experiential learning (Study Away, internships, co-ops, etc.)
Students receiving UAB merit-based scholarships are required to live on campus for their first year of enrollment. For more information, review the Freshman Scholarship Residency Policy.

Once you’ve been admitted to UAB, simply do the following to claim your scholarship:
National Merit Finalists: Name UAB your first choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation; the paperwork for this should be included with your finalist letter. They’ll then send us your name, and we will award your scholarship. Yes, it’s really that easy.

National Achievement Finalists and National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars: Fax or mail us a copy of your Finalist letter and/or your Finalist certificate, and we’ll award your scholarship:
Coordinator of Undergraduate Scholarships
HUC 317
1530 3rd Avenue South
Birmingham, AL 35294

^ I did mention UAB a page or two back. Not sure how it got missed in the update. But hopefully they’ll get it this time :-).

S is really very super excited about the Science and Technology Honors Program and all of the opportunities that the program affords!

Thank you all very much for your suggestions. I am not the best poster to do an update (by a long shot), and I missed many things because I did not read the old threads and only checked with the schools’ scholarship information. So, here is another version. Corrections and additions are needed, because several scholarships are hard to verify.
